THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Every failure is a step to
success; every detection of
what is false directs us
toward what is true; every
trial exhausts some tempt-
ing form of error.

Emotional Reader Response
A July 17 Detroit Free
Press story in which Ar-
chbishop Valerian Trifa de-
fended his actions as a
member of the Romanian
Iron Guard during World
War II prompted letters
from a number of readers,
several of which the Free
Press printed earlier this
month. •
Trifa, leader of the
Romanian Orthodox
Church headquarterd in
Grass Lake, Mich., had his
United States citizenship
revoked in 1982 and was or-
dered out of the country.
However, none of the coun-
tries to which the ar-
chbishop has thus far
applied to emigrate have
agreed to accept him.
Of the letters printed by
the Free Press condemning
Trifa's actions, one, from
Anca Vlasopolos of Detroit,

detailed the Iron Guard's
activities against Jews and
other minorities, citing the
treatment of her father as
an example. Vlasopolos' let-
ter reads, in part:
"Trifa may not con-
sider himself an anti-
Semite because he had
other equal-opportunity
hatreds against other
minorities in Romania —
for instance, the Greeks.
My father, who was
Greek, was dragged from
university lecture halls
along with jewish stu-
dents and was beaten
mercilessly by a gang
headed by Trifa.
"Trifa's statement that no
Jews died within Romanian
territory is a cynical
equivocation. True, Jews
were not killed by govern-
ment decree; they were
merely allowed to be trans-
ported outside the borders
for mass killings. But Tri-
fa's (men) killed . . . in the
streets. My mother's best
friend is haunted by her
father's hanging, a specta-
cle that the family was
forced to witness.
"When Trifa and his
lynch mobs killed unarmed
civilians in Jewish
neighborhoods, they hung
them up on meat hooks in
butcher shops and adver-
tised the corpses as 'kosher
meat."'
Pretexts are not wanting
when one wishes to use
them.
