Danny Raskin's

The Best of Everything

AMONG THE MAIN
features about Larco's Inn
on W. McNichols and San
Juan, is that it has retained
the food so many people still
talk about . . . and em-
ployees who have long-
standing experience there.
Back about 30 years ago,
Larco's was opened by
brothers Nick, Mike and
Pete . . . seating only about
50 to 60 people . . . Then
came the center dining
room . . . and a bit later two
separate banquet and over-
flow rooms with upper and
lower levels, plus its own
bar . . . Seating is now over
500 . . . with 140 in the din-
ing area, 40 lounge seats,
225 in the upper region .. .
and another 100 in another
lower area.
Our waiter, Silvio Lonzo,
at Larco's Inn 13 years,
brought Pat Carlini and
myself the delicious pasta
and pea soup (pasta, peas
and broccoli) for which Lar-
co's is noted . . . and the very
popular Steak Pizzaiolo .. .
I was at lunch with Pat, who
leaves in September for a
seven-week trip to Europe
with wife Marge . . . Larco's
is his favorite place to dine.
Still there are . . . waiter
Chris Rado, who started
as a busboy 30 years ago
when the place opened
. .. and later married into
the Larco family ... wai-
ter Lou Swezzne, almost
20 years ... waitress Kay
Snichler, over 15 years
wiatress Jean Holme,
over 15 years ... barten-
der Richard Morales, 16
years ... waiter Gus
Crocenzi, about 15 years
... pantry woman Ella
Smith, over 15 years ...
Louis Rattu, in the
kitchen almost 20 years.
Owner Jim Macri has
been there 12 years . . . Wife
Angie Larco Macri is at the
restaurant every Saturday
. . . plus also running the
parties and banquets .. .
Son Jim Macri Jr., on the
floor, used to run Larco's at
the Sheraton in Westland
. . . Daughter Joan is also on
the floor.
It's still one of the most
beautiful dining spots
around . . . with those dark
wood walls and overhead
tiny beam lights . . . ele-
gance in simplicity . . . You
won't find too many places
with such sturdy chairs and
tables, either . . . Would be
quite a cost if the restaurant
were to be built today.
Nice to know Larco's Inn
is still doing business . . . it
holds such very wonderful
memories for me.
CONSTAND'S at site of
former Vineyard's is on
target for middle of Sep-
tember opening . . . That'll
probably be the name up-
stairs . . . with authentic
Northern Italian dining .. .
The lower level Franklin
Grille will be strictly
American . . . with meats,
fresh seafood and fresh
broiled fish . . . Former
Annex was to have been
named TC's after Tom Con-
stand, Jim's son, but dis-
