basketball and all the major
sports.
A cursory survey of the
various sports indicates
that as the years roll by
fewer and fewer Jewish
athletes make it to the big
time.
A check with the major
league baseball commis-
sioner's office indicated that
there is only one player of
Jewish descent currently in
the majors, Mark Clear, the
Boston Red Sox relief
pitcher. Clear, had an ex-
ceptional 1982 season with
a record of 14 wins, nine los-
ses and 14 saves. Clear, 27,
is a graduate of Mt. San An-
tonio College, Walnut,
Calif.
The National Football
League, now that place
kicker Dave Jacobs, has
been released, does not
boast of any Jewish
players.
In the National Basket-
ball Association (NBA),
there is Dan Schayes, who is
with the Denver Nuggets
and Ernie Grunfeld, who
played for the New York
Knicks last winter.

high cost of real estate in
Israel's major cities coupled
with a shortage of rental
units has prompted the mi-
gration of many people from
Israel's crowded coastal
cities to the development
towns in the West Bank,
where housing oppor-
tunities are more varied
and less expensive, accord-
ing to a report from the Is-
rael office of the American
Jewish Committee.
For the most part, the
new home owners are young
couples unable to obtain
housing elsewhere at prices
within their reach, the re-
port said. A three-room,
co-op apartment in
Jerusalem may cost as
much as $90,000, depending
on the neighborhood.
Even those Israelis who
do not agree with the set-
tlement policies of the
Begin government have
been tempted by the
mortgage terms offered to
settlers in the West Bank,
according to the report.
Until recently, de-
velopment activities in
the West Bank were pub-
lic projects carried out by
Israel's Housing Ministry
and groups such as the
tion (WZO) or Jewish Na-
tional Fund (JNF), which
are engaged in land re-
clamation and develop-
ment. Now however, the
private sector in Israel is
rapidly buying up land
West Bank and reselling
individual plots for con-
struction and investment
purposes.
Many Israelis have fallen
victim to contractors anx-
ious to promote sales and
without ever having seen
the land; later finding out
that the land is non-existent
or that the person they
brought it from was never
the rightful owner of the
property.
