The Rishonim (Pioneers)
Program is for emotionally
impaired children. Many of
the activities are enjoyed
with the Giborim. However,
when necessity dictates,
these children have their
own classroom.
All three classrooms
cover the Jewish holidays,
symbols, Shabat, Bible
heroes, prayer and Israel.
Introductory Hebrew (pre-
Bar Mitzva), crafts, Israeli
music and dance and cook-
ing and baking are part of
this program.
A computer has been do-
nated to the Beth El pro-
gram. Every student- will be
scheduled to work, with a
friend, for 15-20 minutes at
least twice-a-fnonth on the
computer.
The program is held on
Shabat so the children
can attend worship serv-
ices. Parents are invited
to join them at services.
Seventh and eighth
graders are engaged as
helpers, working with
students on a one-to-one
basis.
The UHS programs meet
at Cong. Bnai David on
Sunday for four hours,
Tuesdays and Thursdays for
two hours each day. Thir-
teen students are in the
learning disabilities class
while 11 students with a
variety of exceptionalities
comprise the second class.
Three students are taught
privately.
The curriculum for the 24
youngsters includes prayer
and synagogue skills,
Jewish holidays, Bible, and
a new Jewish values unit, as
well as - arts and crafts and
music. Developing a strong
Jewish identity and gaining
practical skills are the ob-
jectives of the program.
Four boys are being pre-
pared for Bar Mitzva this
year, for whch they will
read the Maftir with the
appropriate blessings. The
staff of seven is trained in
special-education as well as
Judaica.
The above programs
are open to all Jewish
handicapped children in
the Detroit area. No
transportation is pro-
vided. Car pools can be
arranged upon request.
