Observer Has Mixed Emotions Over Church Body Assembly

By RABBI MARC H.
TANENBAUM

A Seven Arts Feature

As an official representa-
tive of the world Jewish
community attending the
World Council of Churches
Assembly last week in
Canada, I found the experi-
ence enriching, stimulating
— and troublesome.
The enrichment came
from the opportunity it
gave me to meet religious
leaders literally from every
part of the world. I even met

spoke fluent Yiddish.
The stimulation came
from the privilege of listen-
ing to a series of frequently
brilliant papers on the
threat to human survival
posed by the nuclear arms
race, poverty, hunger, world
refugees, and rampant
fanaticism in many parts of
the world.

As the first Jewish
spokesman ever invited
to address a World Coun-
cil plenary of 4,000 dele-
gates and guests, I told
the international gather-
ing that the Jewish
people share many of
these concerns. Given
Judaism's emphasis on

the sanctity of human
life, I stated that world
Jewry is prepared to col-
laborate in the struggle to
assure human survival.

But what I found trouble-
some was an approach to
Christian unity that
seemed to ignore the power-
ful reality of religious
pluralism in the world.
It was also unsettling to
see how Arab Christians
were using their Chris-
tianity to mount blatant
one-sided, anti-Israel cam-
paigns among the WCC
delegates.
Next week, the resolu-
tions on world affairs — in-
cluding the Middle East—
will be introduced. We will
then have a clearer idea as

JERUSALEM — The
danger of Palestine Libera-

forces returning to the
Israel-Lebanon border area
in the event of an im-

was stressed in a statement
released last month by the

The statement was
authored by Michael Ben

Israeli-supervised Ansar
Detention Camp in south
Lebanon earlier this sum-
mer. The statement reads,
in part:
"It's better to keep our
soldiers there (in Lebanon)
until we secure our north-
ern borders -and settle-
ments, and then bring our
soldiers back home, than to
bring the soldiers back im-
mediately, which will allow
the return of the PLO and
maybe Syria to the areas
left by the Israeli army and
to send our soldiers again on
yet another operation to
push the PLO out again
which will cause many more
losses."

In the statement, Ben
Meir also detailed efforts
by the Israeli army to
provide better food and
living conditions for the
prisoners being held in
the camp.

"Hygenically, the army
tries its best to care for the
detainees' health and
physique," the statement
said. "The water tanks are
filled with fresh water every
day. Sewage is disposed of at
least twice a day.
"They (the detainees)
have their own kitchens and
cook whatever they want.
They receive fresh food
supplies every day (includ-
ing) excellent quality fruit,
vegetables and eggs. Also,
fresh bread and fresh meat"
are provided.

BB to Expand
'Shalom Service'

WASHINGTON — Bnai
Brith International's
"Shalom Service," a pro-
gram designed to ease the
pain of moving by keeping
members in touch with each
other, will undergo an ex-
pansion this fall, according
to Dr. Daniel Thursz, execu-
tive vice president of Bnai
Brith.
The Jewish service organ-
ization is setting up a net-
work of contacts throughout
the world Jewish commu-
nity. These contacts, accord-
ing to Thursz, will answer
inquiries and attempt to
pave the way for newcomers
to become part of a city's
Jewish community quickly
and comfortably.
