Sephardic Conference in Israel
Fails to Pull Crowd from Abroad

7%

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Many Israelis of North Afri-
can origin attended a week-
long celebration and exam-
ination of their historic ori-
gins entitled "Shorashim
(Roots): The World Confer-
ence of North African
Jewry" earlier this month.
But the event, devoted
mainly to music, dancing
and folklore, did not appear
to meet hopes and expecta-
tions of its organizers, who
had anticipated mass meet-
ings with the participation
of hundreds or even
thousands of Jews of North
African origin now living in
the U.S. and Europe.
The events were only
sparsely attended, apart

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Supreme Court has
sentenced the former Minis-
ter of Labor, Social Welfare
and Absorption, Aharon
Abu-Hatzeira, to three
months in prison.
This was a more severe
sentence than the Tel Aviv
district court handed down
in April 1982. That court
convicted him on charges of
fraud, theft and breach of
public trust but suspended a
41/2 month jail term. The
Supreme Court held that
the lower court had been too
lenient.
The charges against;
Abu-Iatzeira stemmed
from his administration of a
state-supported charitable
fund established in the
name of his late father,
former Chief Rabbi of
Morocco Yitzhak Abu-
Hatzeira, when he was the
mayor of Ramle in 1976.
The Supreme Court jus-
tices denounced Abu-
Hatzeira's practice of trans-
ferring funds, while he was
welfare minister, to public
institutions.

Dutch Protest
Editorial Cartoon

AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
Letters have been deluging
the leading Dutch daily,
NRC Handelsblad, in pro-
test against a cartoon of
former U.S. Secretary of
State Henry Kissinger
which carried a caption,
"Frustrated Jewboy Re-
sponsible for United States
Central American Policy."
The cartoon, by Frits
Mueller, appeared after
President Reagan named
Kissinger to chair the Na-
tional Bipartisan Commis-
sion on Central America. In
an earlier cartoon, Mueller
depicted Kissinger as a very
ugly Jew. -
Several letter writers,
both Jew's and non-Jews,
protested against the de-
scription of Kissinger as a
"Frustrated Jewboy." The
newspaper has so far re-
fused to apologize nor has
Mueller apologized or
reacted in any way.

from the opening and clos-
ing celebrations, with few
visitors from abroad.
The initiator of the
event, Shaul Bena
Simhon, had stressed the
unifying character of the
conference, but most ob-
servers agreed that it had
rather tended to put the
spotlight on the ethnic
differences between the
many components of
North African Jewry.
Jews of North African
origin form what is known
as the Magrabi section of
Sephardic Jewry and are
the largest group within the
Oriental community of Is-
raeli Jews. Strictly speak-
ing, the Sephardim are
Jews who originated in the
Spanish peninsula, with
Ladino (a mixture of He-
brew and Spanish) as their
lingua franca. These exiles
from the Spanish Inquisi-

tion went to southern
France, Holland and the
Balkans.
The largest- group from
North Africa now in Israel
lived in or are the children
of Jews who lived in Mor-
roco, with slightly smaller
communities in Libya,
Algeria and Tunisia. Other
Sephardim are made up of
Oriental Jews of Iraqi,
Yemenite, Iranian, Syrian
and Lebanese origin.
One of the major attrac-
tions of the North African
conference was a computer
terminal at which partici-
pants could trace back the
origin of their names.
