Plans Are Unveiled for HMC
With scaffolding and gir-
ders forming the backdrop
for a unique gathering, in-
ternationally acclaimed
museum designer James
Gardner unveiled his plans
for the Holocaust Memorial
Center of Detroit.
Gardner, who came from
London for the occasion,
projected drawings of the
HMC's interior for a group
of community leaders and
supporters of the HMC. The
exterior of the building,
which is adjacent to the
main Jewish Community
Center, is all but com-
pleted. The major exhibits,
study area, memorial ramp
and other features of the
interior will be in use by
next summer.
Guests at the reception
learned of the many unique
aspects of the Holocaust
Memorial Center, which is
assuming national propor-
tions with Gardner's in-
volvement. Gardner was
the designer of Beit
Hatefutsoth, the Musuem of
the Diaspora, in Tel Aviv.
More than a museum of
the Holocaust, the HMC
is envisioned as a "living"
institution where visitors
will find information on
the destroyed com-
munities and where they
can learn from the past

documents and maps, as
well as audio presentations.
A memorial flame will be
another important part of
the HMC.
David Mondry, who
served as host for the event
along with Marvin
Goldman and Lawrence
Jackier, said, "This com-
munity has the unique abil-
ity to create an institution
that will speak to the entire
world. This will be a build-
ing not of death but of life."
The president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation,
Avern Cohn, said the dream
of a group of survivors —
New JNF Office Is Dedicated
Shaarit Haplaytah — is
soon to become reality with
the creation of an institu-
tion that will be the only one
of its kind in the world.
In seeking funds for con-
struction and maintenance
of the HMC, donors are
encouraged to make pledges
with payment over a five-
year period.
