The Israeli participants in the Special Olympics were sponsored by AKIM, the Association for the Rahabilitation of the Men- - tally Handicapped in Israel, which now has eight operat- ing U.S. chapters (Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Or- lando, Philadelphia), with plans for additional expan- sion, under the coordination of national director Michele Bokobza. AKIM is an acronym for the organization's full name and also means "I shall corn- fort" in Hebrew. In its 32- year history, AKIM has an- nually cared for more than 25,000 children and adults in Israel of all denomina- tions. "We are very, very proud and delighted with our win- ners," said Detroiter Paul Zuckerman, national president of AKIM U.S.A. "We thank everyone who made this dream a reality, and we hope that through the visibility of our 'athletes,' we can demonstrate the un- limited potential that our mentally handicapped can realize with our help." The current economic crisis must in- evitably negatively affect the future of scientific re- search in this country."
