Citing data from the N6w
York State Educafion De-
partment, the commission
declared that the total
number of children enrolled
in Jewish day schools in
New York in the 1978-1979
school year was 48,879 and
that enrollment for the cur-
rent school year approached
nearly 60,000. The commis-
sion estimated the national
total at nearly 120,000.
The commission said that
the growth over the past
five years came when the
state's total non-public
school population was de-
clining. The Education De-
partment data indicated the
number of Jewish day

schools rose from 185 to 223
in the five-year-period.
The commission re-
ported it had directly as-
sisted the day schools in
their receiving more than
$1 million in New York
state mandated services
reimbursement, for test-
ing and record-keeping.
Several day schools re-
ceived small grants for
technical assistance and
energy conservation
measures under a federal
emergency grant pro-
gram administered by
the state.
Describing such gains as
small, the commission de-
clared that government
reimbursement did not even
begin to offset cuts suffered
by the day schools in such
fields as school lunches.
Staggered by inflation and
higher operating costs, the
overall financial condition
of Jewish day schools in
New York state has mar-
kedly deteriorated, the
commission declared.

More Sentenced
for Refusing
Lebanon Service

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Four
more reserve soldiers were
sentenced to prison terms
from 28 to 40 days last week
for refusing to serve in
Lebanon. This brought the
number of reservists so far
punished for refusal to serve
to 75, according to the Yesh
Gevul (There is a Limit)
organization. Seven reser-
vists are now serving prison
terms.
In a number of cases, re-
servists who have com-
pleted their sentences are
immediately called up
again and posted to Leba-
non. Some of them have re-
fused a second time, and
have again been sentenced
to prison terms.
Dozens of Yesh Gevul
members demonstrated
Saturday outside the mili-
tary prison where reservists
are serving their sentences.
Some climbed a nearby hill
and displayed banners of
encouragement to those be-
hind the prison walls.

Lyon," was extradited from
Bolivia and is awaiting trial

from Natanya to their home
in Shomrei Shomron when

near Anabta village.
Shortly afterwards shots
were also fired at a civilian
bus carrying soldiers near

a curfew along the
