Distortion of Religion?

Rabbi M. Robert Syme of
Temple Israel was among
the area religious leaders
quoted by the Detroit News
last weekend in reaction to
the recent controversy sur-
rounding the House of
Judah religious camp near
South Haven.
Six of the cult members,
who refer to themselves as
black Hebrew Israelite
Jews, have been charged
with manslaughter and
child abuse following the
death of a 12-year-old boy at
the camp.

According to the News,
Rabbi Syme said the
House of Judah can call
itself Jewish "or any-
thing else they want," but
he accused the cult mem-

bers of distorting reli-
gion.

"Religion has beautiful
concepts and values, but it
is we the people who distort
the message," the rabbi
said. "And this creates a bad
name for religion.
