Lyesk, Russia during the
period of 1914-1919 when a
succession of governments
— Russian, German, Polish,
Bolshevik and Polish again
— ruled the town with in-
creasing anti-Semitism. It
is the story of the Chodorov
family — Malkeh, the
mother; Naftali, the father;
and four daughters, Ruth,
Kala,
Sophie
and
Ekaterina. Iosif, the son,
had already emigrated to
Detroit when the novel be-
gins.
Kala, the main char-
acter, is a traditional
Jewess and a patriotic
Russian. At 16, she is em-
broiled in the wars that
beset her homeland. She
is hardworking and de-
voted to her family and
townsmen, but must
leave them to pursue her
political beliefs.
She joins the evacuation
march from Western
Europe toward Great Rus-
sia, during which there
were few survivors among

the three million refugees
that participated.
The book follows her love
affair and marriage to a
revolutionary, her survival
of the march and the civil
war in Moscow and then her
disappointing return to her
family and town.
The Chodorovs ulti-
mately come to the decision
to emigrate to America from
a country that does not ap-
preciate their dedication
and patriotism and perse-
cutes them because they are
Jews.
The authors wrote this
novel based on family
stories which had been
taped and following re-
search into the history of
the period covered by the
book.
"Remember This Time" is
a labor of love that will have
many of us saying, "I wish I
had written it."

Notes From
the Publisher

The novel "Remember
This Time" was inspired by
the life in Russia of Tiebel
Kowal Margolis of Oak
Park, who died recently
with her husband, Hyman,
in an automobile accident in
Detroit. They were the par-
ents of Esther Margolis,
publisher of Newmarket
Press.
Tiebel Kowal Margolis
was the last survivor of
seven children who emi-
grated to the Detroit-
Windsor area from Russia
between 1913 and 1930. She
was born and raised in
Luninyets (characterized as
Lyesk in the novel), a small
town near Pinsk.
She arrived in Canada in
1928, at the age of 24, set-
tled in Detroit soon after
and married Hyman Mar-
golis in 1932. He was born
in London, and raised in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Margolis had
worked with her daugh-
ter, and her niece and
nephew Gloria and Bill
Broder, on the back-
ground for the novel dur-
ing the last five years. She
was interviewed numer-
ous times, along with
several other relatives
who survive from that
time, including her two
brothers-in-law, Roy Ku-
