Documentary Critical of U.S. Role in Klaus Barbie Case

intelligence officers to
Klaus Barbie was both
granted consideration and
at the same time excoriated
in Monday's public televi-
sion documentary on the

thousands of Jewish and
Christian victims to the
death camps.
In an elaborate review of
the documentary, which
aired locally on channel 56,

the New York Times stated:
"It is hard to condone, dif-
ficult to defend and im-
possible to praise the
American connection with
Barbie."
The Times' account of
the documentary also
made note of its
thoroughness:
"In one moving interview,
a woman talks of being be-
aten by Barbie for five days
when she was 13 years old.
In another interveiew, a
man says that Barbie
enjoyed causing pain.

University professor
Erhard Dabringhaus, a
one-time U.S. intelligence
agent who had contact with
Barbie in Europe following
World War II was also
interviewed for the pro-
gram. According to the
Times, Dabringhaus "de-
scribed how Barbie lived
while he was paid by
Americans. He was made
comfortable. Certainly
there is something repug-
nant about this, although it
may be made more bearable
by keeping in mind what
the former Gestapo officer
was doing at the time.
"The Wayne State pro-
fessor said that Barbie
prepared weekly reports
on other missing Nazis.
He also said Mr. Barbie
had provided informa-
tion that indicated the
Russians were working
on an atomic bomb."

Resolutions have been in-
troduced in the Senate and
the House urging the U.S. to
express to relevant gov-
ernments its concern for the
Jews in Ethiopia and par-
ticularly "their right to
emigrate."
A resolution was intro-
duced last week by Sens.
Paul Tsongas (D. Mass.) and
Charles Percy (R. Ill.),
chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Commit-
tee. A similar resolution
was introduced in the House
by Reps. Stephen Solarz (D.
NY) and Barney Frank (D.
Mass.). The resolutions ex-
press "the concern of the
American people for the
welfare of the Ethiopian
Jewish community."
In addition to the resolu-
tions, Congressmen have
been urging the Reagan
Administration to increase
aid to drought stricken
Parts of Ethiopia. One of the
worst hit areas in Gondar
province where most Ethio-
pian Jews live.

Schoolhouses are the re-
publican line of fortifica-
