imanionowinsimmii THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Blumberg Fund Set Up to Aid Visually Handicapped To the numerous list of major causes which have been on his philanthropic list, Louis Blumberg has added the visually im- paired. Blumberg this week an- nounced the establishment of the Philip Slomovitz Low Vision Assistance Fund to be operated through the Oakland County Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Far- mington Hills Public Li- brary. This fund, which he named in honor of Slomovitz as an expression of friendship, will provide low vision cameras for the visually handicapped and will provide means to sup- plement the computerized facilities at the library. Carole Hund, super- visor of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, welcomed the fund as means of im- plementing the needs that are hampered by the minimal assistance available from Federal and Oakland County funds. Among the services of- fered to the visually handi- Scripts LOUIS BLUMBERG capped are recordings of novels, biographies, chil- dren's books and best- sellers. These services are free to certified blind or physically handicapped Oakland residents. Persons who wish to avail themselves of the service must be blind or have a vis- ual or other physical hand- icap that would preclude their using regular reading materials. A professional, such as a physician or social worker, must certify the disability. More than 10,000 record- ings of books are available. Welcoming the urgently needed support, otherwise unavailable, Miss Hund pointed to the current needs of the Library for the Blind. She stated: "Many of the Subregional Libraries in the United States and several in Michigan have been using, with great success, com- puters as a means of storing information about their readers and then retrieving information for assistance in book selection and circu- lation of materials. "The National Library Service is producing a software package that can be implemented on a. mic- rocomputer that will be capable of several processes including circulation, machine inventory and interface with National Library Service computer system. Software is nor- mally very expensive but the NLS software package will be free of charge to net- work libraries. "We will still have to purchase a compatible 16-bit micro-computer in order to use the software.. At present we have no funds available for this purpose. "Good service is the goal of our library and I am con- vinced we will give better service with the help of computers. Computers will not replace staff. We believe in personalized library serv- ice — the computer will re- lieve staff of much of the clerical work and allow us more time to confer with readers about books, mate- rials and problems encountered. A statement issued by the Foreign Office says that if the Israeli decision to make a partial withdrawal is in- tended as a first stage in a complete withdrawal it would be welcomed by Brit- ain. But if it amounted to a de facto partition of Leba- non, then it would under- mine the stability of the region and should be avoided at all costs, for personal use. "Technological advances are being made every day, it is important that we are able to show our readers the newest types of equipment available to help them in their search for a means of reading and writing inde- pendently."
