Physicists Protest Soviet Treatment
of Colleague, Wife_ at Crete Parley
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Physicists from around the
world who attended a major
international scientific con-
ference in Crete earlier this
month have protested to
Soviet authorities against
the refusal to allow Prof.
Armen Khachaturyan and
his wife, Svetlana, to attend
the conference and the con-
tinued denial to them of exit
visas to emigrate, the World
Jewish Congress reported.
The professor and his
wife, leading experts in the
theory of phase transforma-
tion, first applied to emi-
grate to Israel in July, 1981.
According to the Central
board of Jewish Com-
munities in Greece, the
WJC affiliate in that coun-
try, the protest by the
physicists at the conference
took the form of a letter
signed by some. 100 partici-
pants. In addition, the sci-
entists went on a partial
fast in solidarity with the
hunger strike that the
U.S., Israel Officials Discuss

tists staged for the duration
of the four-day conference.
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The U.S. Department of
Justice is conducting high-
level talks in Israel this
week about the possibility
of deporting or extraditing
to Israel Nazi war criminals
living in the U.S.
The other two Soviet sci-
entists were Edward Nad-
gornyi, an authority in dis-
location dynamics, and
Leonid Ozernoy, a leading
specialist in theoretical
astrophysics. They, too,
have applied for exit visas to
Israel and have been perse-
cuted as a result, according
to the WJC.

chbishop who was strip-
ped of his U.S. citizenship
and ordered deported for
having entered the U.S.
without disclosing his
wartime position and ac-
tivities with the Fascist
and anti-Semitic Roma-
nian Iron Guard. How-
ever, Russell noted, the
U.S. is also discussing
sending other Nazi war

against humanity during
the Nazi era. According to
the Justice Department, the
Israelis will seek to deter-
mine in each case, including
Trifa's, whether they will be
able to prosecute the person
under Israeli law.
