Project Support Aids the Elderly

Two days a week, Dora
Demak waits with anticipa-
tion for the van that will
take her to the Jewish
Home for Aged — Meyer L.
Prentis Manor in South-
field, where she is enrolled
in a unique and innovative
program.
Project Support is a day
program for elderly Jewish
persons who live in the
community and receive
daily care from family or
aides. (A day program for
those who are more active is
sponsored at JHA's Borman
Hall.)

"Through Project Sup-
port, we break the isolation
barrier that surrounds so
many of the elderly people
in our community," said
Cheryl Riskin, assistant di-
rector of the Jewish Home
for Aged and administrator
of Prentis Manor.

She explained that
many aged people have
little or no contact with
other persons their own
age, those with whom
they share the unique
bond of experience. Proj-
ect Support offers older
persons an opportunity
to re-establish the sup-
port of a friendship net-
work, Riskin said.
Renee Mahler, director of
the three-month-old pro-
gram, added that specially
trained staff members pro-

vide socialization, therapy
and help with hygiene.
Participants join in the
regular daytime activities
at Prentis, which include
Yiddish discussions, music
therapy, sing-a-longs, cur-
rent events and a Friday af-
ternoon oneg Shabat. They
also receive individualized
grooming and physical and
occupational therapy. Proj-
ect Support enrollees are
served a full-course hot
lunch and afternoon tea.
"The aging process often
involves a 'loss of responsi-
bility," said Ms. Riskin.
"Through this program, we
are able to restore some of
that responsibility. Our
participants know that they
must be dressed and wait-
ing for the van at least two
days a week and that they
will have the chance to
interact withothers."
A central feature of the
program is that it pro-
vides a necessary respite
for family members. They
are assured that their el-
derly relative is receiving
individualized care in a
stimulating and suppor-
tive environment.
The program is held
Monday through Friday,
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a
minimum commitment of
two days per week is re-
quired. Applicants are
screened and must have
written permission from
