Now Is Time For Lebanon Editor, The Jewish News: Now that the PLO has been stricken with defeat in Beirut, and by dissen- sion from within by Libyan and Syrian adherents hos- tile to Arafat, the Soviet Union and Cuba, pending developments, remain si- lent. It is time the Lebanese government should insist that the PLO, Syria and Is- rael withdraw their armed forces. Israel has already agreed to do so if the others do. If Syria and the PLO re- fuse to budge, then Lebanon has the authority to warn them, "If you delay with- drawal from Lebanon for more than 30 days, we will recognize Israel as a friendly and peaceful na- tion, the same as all other nations." It would help both Lebanon and Israel eco- nomically, industrially and financially, and help bring new industries and em- ployment for the refugees and others. It may even pro- vide for better camps for the refugees and opportunities to work. The PLO, with its ter- roristic actions, have for many years blocked the road to peace. Why not open the gates of peace and restore law, order and prosperity in one of the most beautiful na- tions in the world? Lebanon needs a climate of peace and mutual under- standing so that its citizens can live out their lives in se- curity, regardless of race, color or creed, under their vines and fig trees in tran- quility and peace in a free and independent nation. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Hamilton Fish CREATE PHOTOGRAPHY ASSOC. They said their orders had to be filled immediately, with no delay. The said 25 young, beau- tiful girls from the ghetto had to be brought to the police station located off Shoshana St. They said the girls, 14-18 years of age, would clean the building and scrub the floors. This was a lie. The Nazis and the Uk- rainians wanted the girls for their pleasure. The brutish barbarians raped these youngsters. It was a tragedy for the children, their parents and the whole ghetto. Prayers were heard in the ghetto all night, but the parents believed that God didn't hear their prayers. The next day the innocent young girls were loaded on a truck. Some were very ill. On Elul 14 they were shot to death in the Sarney Ghetto. I am an eyewitness. This statement is dedi- cated to a special case, to the memory of 25 young Jewish girls who were murdered in occupied Europe. Many "or- ders" like this one were car- ried out in every ghetto. No more survivors, no witnesses. Mayer Broder rabid anti-Jewish attitudes of King Hussein and those of his grandfather, King Abdullah. ' While the article noted that there is no dis- agreement between Jews and Arabs regarding the account of the progrom at Hebron in 1929, "the question over which they differ," states Bernstein, "is whether, after the passage of more than 50 years, the Jews have the right to move back in." The author of the article apparently fails to rec- ognize the hypocricy of Arab thinking which de- mands that Palestinian Arabs be allowed to re- turn to their homes but grants no such right to the Jews of Hebron. Aharon Gross is the eighth murder victim of Arab terrorism in Hebron during the last three years; the time has come for the government of Israel to im- plement full Jewish rights to Hebron as well as the entire regions of Judea, Samaria, Gaza and the Golan Heights. Only when these areas are fully integrated with the state of Israel will such PLO-inspired acts of mur- der against Jews be halted in Hebron and throughout the administered ter- ritories. weddings were done pri- vately, with no publicity. Indeed, one was performed at a tiny ceremony in a dis- tant city. Surely more than one Yom Kippur has passed for Rabbi Nelson to have truly forgiven and forgotten. Rabbi Chaim M. Bergstein WXYZ Charge Is Explained Editor, The Jewish News: It is regrettable that a misinformed public finds it necessary to refute alleged charges of anti-Semitism against WXYZ-AM Radio personality Mark Scott. Neither in articles pub- lished by The Jewish News nor in the letter sent to WXYZ Radio Operations Manager Michael Packer by the Jewish Community Council and the Anti- Defamation League has Mark Scott been charged with being anti-Semitic. Had those who have made comments on the airwaves and who have written let- ters in defense of Mark Scott phoned the Council or ADL offices regarding the con- tents of The Jewish News articles and the letter to Packer, they would have discovered that the sup- posed accusation was non- existent. Rather, the references to both Mark Scott and Kevin Joyce pointed to a "community perception" regarding the talk-show program content and the permitted use of the air- waves by bigots with which the two agencies became concerned. The defense mounted on behalf of Mark Scott was unnecessary and served to distort the intent of our agencies' actions. Steven Hilsenr ath Tagar Student Activists * * * Shaun Liebskin Hebron Put in Perspective Editor, The Jewish News: On July 12, the New York Times published a story by Richard Bernstein concern- ing recent events in the city of Hebron. It is to be noted that Bernstein's reference to Hebron as an "ancient Arab city" is historically in- accurate. Hebron was the capital of Judah in the days of King David and one of the four holy cities of the Jews long before the Arab inva- sion of Palestine in the 7th Century BCE. Jews have lived con- tinuously in Hebron from Biblical times to 1929 when survivors were driven out as a result of an Arab massacre which left 69 dead and over a hundred wounded. The re- sult — an entire ancient Jewish community left homeless, and forced to seek refuge in the equally an- cient Jewish community of Jerusalem. Even after the 1929 mas- sacre, Jews continued to make pilgrimages to the Cave of Machpela where the patriarch Abraham is buried as is his son Issac and grandson' Israel and their respective wives. Only from 1948-1967 when the Hashemite Kingdom of Jor- dan illegally annexed Judea and Samaria were Jews for- bidden to reside in or visit Hebron — this due to the Betar Youth * * * A Reply to Rabbi Nelson Editor, The Jewish News: Rabbi David Nelson's let- ter attacking the integrity of Lubavitch requires some clarification. He claims that the tal- mudic statement: "These and these are the words of the Living G-d," implies that his opinions should be given equal acceptance in "Orthodox" circles. This quotation refers to the arguments of Bet Shamai and Bet Hillel and means that from a scholastic view- point Bet Shamai has validity in truth of Torah. However, concerning law — Halakha — the same Talmud says, "Bet Shamai Bimkom Bet Hillel Eino Mishneh," in matters of Halakha, only Bet Hillel's opinion is to be considered. Rabbi Nelson's views, no matter how scholarly, might have validity in the realm of scholarship, but if they contradict the Halakha — the Shulhan Arukh — then they re- ceive the same treatment as the opinions of the Disciples of Shamai. With regard to the em- barrassment of Rabbi Nel- son concerning the two "re- done" weddings, one won- ders at the reaction.
