The Wiesenthal Center immediately contacted the Dutch Ambassador to Canada, N. Van Dijl, asking that his government submit "a revised request for this murder's extradition." The Center also called on the president and chancellor of the Univer- sity of British Columbia to dismiss Luitjens on grounds that "a man who volunteered to help the Nazis and was convicted of war crimes by a court in an allied democratic country cannot be allowed to maintain a position of prestige and honor." Luitjens, 62, was con- victed by a Dutch court in 1948 for his activities in the Nazi auxiliary police force the "Quisling Militia," which rounded up anti- Nazis for deportation. He was personally involved in the murder of resistance fighters. He fled Europe after World War II, reportedly to South America from where he immigrated to Canada. He has been a member of the botany department at the University of British Columbia for more than 20 years. The Dutch government first sought his extradition in 1981. Jewish Vocational Continues Displaced Homemakers Unit Through a grant from the Michigan Department of Labor, Office of Women and Work, Jewish Vocational Service and Community Workshop, a non-sectarian agency, announces the con- tinuation of its displaced homemaker program for in- dividuals from Wayne and Oakland counties. Displaced homemakers are former homemakers who, through divorce, 'sep- aration, widowhood, disa- bility of spouse, or other crises, have lost their source of economic support. After spending a substantial number of years in the home caring for family members, displaced homemakers find returning to the job market a difficult transition. This special program of- fers employability skills, vocational counseling and job placement services. Eligibility is based on mari- tal and employment status and age of children. There are no income guidelines. Interested applicants should call Rita Morse or Sherri Lumberg at Jewish Vocational Service and Community Workshop, 967-0500.
