Today is Buddy Rich ork
along with the Bugs Be-
ddow Quintet . . . Buddy's
jazz career began in 1938 at
the Hickory House in New
York City . . . He formed his
first jazz band in 1946 .. .
Two years later, Buddy
went on tour with Norman
Granz Jazz at the Philhar-
monic troupe . . . In between
tours, he helped bring about
a new music known as be-
bop, later shortened to bop.
In the 1950's, Buddy per-
formed alternately with
Harry James and Tommy
Dorsey, until a heart attack
in 1959 . . . He returned to
Harry James' band in 1961.
His trademark is skill
on the drums ... always
wonderful ... sometimes
wild.
Trombonist Bugs Beddow
plays contemporary jazz
and pop music.
Back in the early 1960s,
Americans got a taste of the
seductive sounds of Brazi-
lian music . . . a taste that
was satisfied by the likes of
Stan Getz and Herbie
Mann.
Now, Brazil is back .. .
with Flora Purim and Airto,
together at P'Jazz . this
Monday.
