High Holy Day Appeals
for Bonds Are Planned

Synagogues in Michigan
will take part in the ex-
panded 1983-5744 Israel
Bond High Holy Day Appe-
als this Rosh Hashana and
Yom Kippur to mobilize
funds for Israel's continued
economic development.
Members of 19 Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform
congregations will be asked
to purchase Israel Bonds
"for Israel and the young" in
Israel's 35th Anniversary
Year, it was announced by
Max Sosin, Detroit
synagogue activities
chairman for Israel Bonds.
To ensure the identifica-
tion of the younger North
American Jewish genera-
tion with Israel, each par-
ticipating congregation is
being asked to form a corps
of young ushers, preferably
those who recently cele-
brated their Bar or Bat
Mitzva, to collect tab cards
during the appeal.

Congregants will be
encouraged to make their
own Bond purchases and
additional purchases for
children or
grandchildren.
D. Dan Kahn, Israel
Bonds general chairman for
Michigan, said "To continue
the tradition of economic
support for Israel, we must
encourage the younger gen-
eration, the future leaders
of our communities, to iden-
tify with Israel and its
young people's future."
The tab card which will be
used in this year's appeal
bears the slogan, "For Israel
and the Young."
By buying $1,000 or more
in Bonds, participants in
the appeal can enroll as
"Shomrei Yisrael" (Guard-
ians of Israel). By purchas-
ing a $1,000 Bond for a child
or grandchild, congregants
can enroll the young per-
sons as a "Shomer Yisrael."

Tisha b'Av Is Not an Outdated Holiday
When the Evils It Laments Still Exist

By RABBI JACK
GOLDMAN

I have known Rabbi
Yitzchok Greenberg for
some 35 years. Since he be-
came spokesman for the Na-
tional Jewish Resource
Center, I have enjoyed read-
ing his well-informed and
elucidating articles in The
Jewish News.
His last article, however,
on the inner conflicts that
he perceives in the obser-
vance of Tisha b'Av (The
Jewish News, July 15) is
one with which I must take
exception.
Rabbi Greenberg argues
that there already is a state
of Israel; there already is a
land in which the language
of the prophets is the ver-
nacular; there is a home for
Jewish refugees from
around the world; and the
Israeli rabbinate has re-
ffered to the Jewish state as
"the beginning growth of
our redemption."
What need is there for
mourning the destroyed
Jewish state of 1,900 years
ago, asks Rabbi Greenberg.
I cannot agree. Our
sages tell us that the
Temple of Solomon was
destroyed because of
three reasons: idolatry,
bloodshed and moral
profligacy; the second
Temple of Jerusalem,
however, was destroyed
because of internecine
hatred of one Jew for an-
other — the very opposite
of brotherly love.
When we read the Book of
Lamentations on the night
of Tisha b'Av, we sit in
mourning not only over the
destruction of the Temples,
we not only bemoan our
exile these two millenia, but
we deplore the conditions
that brought about that Di-
vine retribution which, to
our great chagrin, still exist
in our own day!
In the past few weeks, the
Jewish world was shocked
by the merciless and brutal
assault of one Hasidic sect
upon another. In the holy
city of Jerusalem, youthful
fanatics are taught to throw
stones on the Sabbath, even
causing serious injury or
loss of life.
More than ever before,
one reads in the press of
quasi-religious Jews who
engage in murder, - theft,
and gross immorality, and
then reject kosher OU food
