New Jerusalem Landmark?

NEW YORK — An
Israeli-born artist is seek-
ing approval to construct a
modern gate to the city of
Jerusalem that would span
the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem
Highway and frame the city
from a point more than
three miles away, the New
York Times reported.
The gate is the dream of
Gvora Novak, a 49-year-old
Sabra who now resides in
New York. The only official
obstacles remaining in
Novak's path, according to
the Times,'are the final two
stages of Israeli legal proce-
dure for such projects; ap-
proval of the plan by the
Minister of Interior and
permission to alter the
highway. -
Novak has had a tougher
time convincing the Israeli
public to accept the gate,
however, the Times re-
ported. The idea of a 250 ft.,
stainless steel helix covered
with a coat of gold paint has
drawn a mixed reaction
from Israelis.
