Sharon Meets Mother
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The bereaved mother of a
young Israeli soldier killed
in the early stages of the
war in Lebanon last sum-
mer had a lengthy meeting
with former Defense Minis-
ter Ariel Sharon last week.
Mrs. Raya Harnik, still
mourning her son, Goony,
who fell in the battle for the
Beaufort Castle, said she
continues to seek a justifica-
tion for his death.
Sharon asked her to his
office after receiving a letter
from Mrs. Harnik explain-
ing why the parents of the
six soldiers who died in the
assault on Beaufort Castle
felt bitterness toward him.
On the evening following,
the battle, Sharon had de-
clared on television that
there had been no Israeli
fatalities. When the error
was discovered, Sharon
should have apologized to
the parents, but he never
did, Harnik wrote.
Sharon, now a Minis-
ter-Without-Portfolio, told
Mrs. Harnik during their
2 1/2-hour meeting that he
was occupied at a Cabinet
meeting at the time and
later simply forgot to cor-
rect a statement he made to
a television crew that he
would not apologize to
people who called him
"murderer."
According to a report
in Yediot Ahronot, Sha-
ron also told Mrs. Harnik,
"Nobody can understand
you better. Both of us are
bereaved parents." Sha-
ron's young son was kil-
led accidentally while
playing with a loaded
gun at home.

The
meeting ended with a silent
handshake. Mrs. Harnik
told reporters later, "He did
not convince me, neither did
I convince him. I am still
looking for the justification
for Goony's death."
City of David Dig Brings
Protest from Ultra-Orthodox
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
About 2,000 ultra-Orthodox
Jews caused a mammoth
traffic jam in downtown
Jerusalem Monday in a
protest demonstration
against the resumption of
archeological excavations
in the City of David just out-
side the Old City walls.
Several policemen were
injured in clashes with reli-
gious zealots. Twenty-five
protesters were arrested.
The Education Ministry
last month licensed Hebrew
University archeologist
Yigal Shilo to continue with
the digging after it was sus-
pended because of claims by
Orthodox Jews that ancient
Jewish cemeteries were
being desecrated.
The area where digging
is permitted, known as
Area G, was delineated in
an agreement reached
between the ministry and
the Chief Rabbinate.
The Orthodox demon-
strators said they did not
seek a license from the
"Zionist police" for their
prayer and psalm-singing
session is what known as
"Shabbos Square," a tradi-
tional Jerusalem site for
Orthodox rallies.
Cordons of police pre-
vented attempts by the
demonstrators to move
toward the digging site. But
a iffelee developed in which
a policewoman was knocked
unconscious and several
regular and border police-
men sustained injuries.

New Year
NEW YORK (JTA) — A
New York state law ap-
proved in 1982 to increase
the penalty for acts of desec-
ration against synagogues
and churches has been ex-
tended by new legislation to
include damage to educa-
tional and residential prem-
ises, State Assemblyman
Sheldon Silver reported this
week.
Two bills sponsored by
Silver to address the prob-
lem were approved by the
assembly, and similar
measures, introduced in the
state senate by Sen. Nor-
man Levy were approved
overwhelmingly in each
house and are now on Gov-
ernor Mario Cuomo's desk
for his expected signature.
