ROBERT NAFTALY troiters who participated in the recent United Jewish Appeal mission to Poland and Israel. For Robinson, Poland was a return to the birth- place of his forebears — "back to the enormous cemetery that remains of Polish Jewry." He re- turned from the visit saddened but deter- mined to make "Jewish renewal" a cornerstone of the 1984 Campaign. In Israel, the Detroiters visited Ramla, this commu- nity's Project Renewal "twin city." They also met with representatives of the Jewish Agency, former Soviet "refuseniks" and other Israelis. The enthusiasm and ex- citement that greeted them in Ramla, "where De- troiters are considered fam- ily," was a far cry from the sadness that enveloped them in Poland. They vis- ited sites in the area of the former Warsaw Ghetto, participated in a ceremony of rededication at the Ghetto Monument, cele- brated the Sabbath in the recently restored synagogue and attended a performance of "The Dyb- buk" at the Yiddish Thea- ter. . Robinson said that the representative from Po- land's Ministry of Religious Affairs spoke "glowingly" of the Jews and noted with pride that the government supports the Yiddish Thea- ter (most of whose actors are not Jewish).
