THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 34 Friday, July 15, 1983 Begin Called Father-Figure TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Arye Eliav, former secretary-general of the Labor Party, writes in the left-wing newspaper Al Hamishmar that Menahem Begin has been popular with the Israeli electorate because he projects an image as a father-figure. Criticism of the Likud government is generally di- rected at the Likud gov- ernment and not at Begin himself, Eliav wrote. He said most Israelis are cur- rently enjoying both guns New Encyclopedia Judaica Volume Documents 1970s and butter (relatively good domestic economy despite high defense costs) and as long as this situation con- tinues Begin will be dif- ficult to defeat. By DR. DAVID GEFFEN World Zionist Press Service From 3 p.m. JERUSALEM — "A de- cade has passed since the 16 volumes of the Encyclopedia Judaica ap- peared. In a world that has changed so dramatically and in Jerusalem that has so dramatically been a part of that change, it is more than fitting that this new volume reflect sb much of that drama." Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek penned these senti- ments in his foreword to the newly issued Decennial Book of the Encyclopedia Judaica covering the years 1972-1981. The encyclopedia was issued ini- tially in 1972 by the Keter Publishing House in Daily Hors: Allot-Thurs. 11-11 Fri.-Sat. til 12:30 a.m. Sun. from 3 p.m. THE PERFECT BLEND Press Lauded HELSINKI (ZINS) — Scandinavian representa- tives at next year's Interna- tional Press Congress in London will recommend a citation of excellence be given to Israel for coverage of the war in Lebanon. So widespread is its im- pact that even before peace negotiations were under- way between Israel and Egypt, five sets of the encyclopedia reached Egypt. Since the peace negotiations, many more sets have found their way, at times circuitously, into Arab countries. In fact today no matter what country one visits, one will find that every major academic library in the world has the encyclopedia and its four yearbooks issued during the last 10 years. Sets have also been pur- chased by a large number of theological seminaries of various Christian de- nominations. During the planning stages for the Museum of the Diaspora in Tel Aviv, contact was made with Keter to get permission to put the information in the encyclopedia on to a com- puter. This arrangement was effected, and the data computerized. For the thousands of visitors to the museum, securing informa- tion at the computer termi- nals has become one of the highlights of their visit. Because of the wide- spread dissemination of its information, the encyclopedia generates a constant flow of letters from readers the world over. Pub- lications, academic as well as popular, constantly write to Keter asking permission to quote from the encyclopedia.
