K THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS GENEVA (JTA) — Units of the Swiss army will maintain security during the United Nations- sponsored conference on Palestine opening here next month, the government an- nounced. The army was called in because the local authorities said they could not be responsible for secu- rity measures, especially at a time when many of their people would be on vaca- light In Your" Own Driveway! p If - TUNE THE -UP MAN Certified by the National Automotive Institute of Excellence Comes to your home or office with the 'garage-on-wheel s Valet service that doesn't cost one penny extra ■ Expert diagnostic tune-up ■ Electronic analyzer - all engine systems ■ Professionally trained mechanics ■ Perfect results assured Centers Institute Expanded Services Call Sanford Rosenberg for your car problems 398-3605 master charge r. VISA' tion. But the Geneva police chief said the army was not an adequate substitute be- cause soldiers are not trained for that kind of work. A spokesman for the armed forces seemed to agree. He told a press con- ference today "the army is not really enthusiastic about having to perform the task." Units from the Canton of Turgovi will be as- signed to guard the air- ports, frontiers and foreign missions as well as the UN Palaise des Na- tions where the confer- ence will be held. A spe- cial committee was set up of government officials, army officers and the Geneva Canton authorities to coordinate the measures. The heavy burden of se- curity around a conference considered likely to attract terrorist elements was the official reason given by the French and Austrian gov- ernments for refusing to host the conference. a NEW YORK — JWB and the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania will con- duct a three-day Summer Institute on Financial Management in August for executive directors of Jewish community centers and YM-YWHAs. Difficult Task of Hillel Rabbis By PROF. ARNOLD AGES TORONTO — We note that a number of Hillel rab- bis did an unheard of thing recently; they picketed a Bnai Brith office in order to publicize their request for salary increases. Their demonstration was undoubtedly prompted by the growing frustration they have encountered try- ing to keep body and soul together with the meager honoraria they receive as Hillel rabbis. It was reported that in some cases Reform rabbis start at salaries considera- bly in excess of what some Hillel rabbis make after years of service to the cause of campus youth. This is not right on many grounds. Hillel rabbis have what is probably the most dif- ficult Jewish consti- tuency in the world— col- lege youth. It is a genera- tion (with rare exception) characterized by rebel- lion on the one hand and indifference on the other. The vast majority of Jewish college students come to the university cam- pus bereft of any deep knowledge or understand- ing of their Jewish roots. Most come equipped with nothing more than an elementary Jewish educa- tion. At the university they are exposed to sophisticated professors (many of whom are Jewish) who tear down the infantile understanding of Judaism shared by so many students. They do'this in part by contrasting the "parochialism" of Jewish life with the "universalism" of the university atmos- phere (never realizing of course that universalism is probably the most parochial, of all philosophies). The same students who find their Judaism under attack meet an even more potent adversary in the Jewish student peer who represents a life style diametrically opposed to the value system endorsed by the synagogue and Jewish home. Facing these assaults on the integrity of Judaism is the campus Hillel Founda- tion, its rabbi and staff — trying with modest re- sources to instruct, enlighten, fortify and nur- ture the Jewish student in search of security. The Hillel rabbi daily faces the same problems as his colleague in the synagogue ; in addition he has challenges which his Battle Waging TEL AVIV (JTA) — Re- newed tension is reported between salaried doctors who recently ended their four-month strike and gov- ernment officials, because of delays in the appoint- ment of an agreed neutral arbitrator. counterpart does not encounter. For one thing the Hillel rabbi must minister to the spiritual needs of diverse kinds of Jews who represent a broad denominational spectrum. He must service those needs with intelli- gence and tact. But his most serious problem is dealing with young Jews who are at their most vulnerable psychological moments of life — as they face un- known and potentially disruptive intellectual and emotional chal- lenges. The man who is entrusted with such important and de- licate tasks — the care of Jewish youth — deserves our support, encourage- ment and financial assis- tance. osins 'Where Fit is Foremost ..
