16 Friday, July 15, 1983 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Birthday Marked 'Going All the Way' in Lebanon Goes Too Far PARIS — Artist Marc Chagall celebrated his 96th birthday last week at his home in St. Paul de Vence, France. By EZEKIEL LEIKIN "Going All the Way — Christian Warlords, Is- raeli Adventurers and the War in Lebanon" by Jonathan C. Randal (Vik- ing Press) is a readable, often exciting account of Lebanon's Civil War, the dismemberment of a coun- try once known as the TERRY I. In a racy, reportorial style, the author offers a vivid portrayal of the Chris- tian warlords as ruthless, manipulative and corrupt "dynasties," each with its own fiefdom, militia and rules of conduct. He reaps scorn upon the reckless and senseless activities of the ruling families — the Cha- mouns, the Gemayels, the Franjiehs — singling out the Gemayels for special condemnation and giving the Druze chieftain Jumblatt and other factions operating in the periphery only scant attention. While Randal concedes that the PLO set up a state-within-a-state in Lebanon, he genrally treats the PLO with a detachment Just Arrived: Loads of new F1 and LA ELLESSE tennis clothing. His chapters on Israel's Leba- non campaign bristle with condemnation of Israel's "sinister" motives in initiat- ing the "carnage," and he indicts the Jewish state for its Machiavellian collusion with the Chamouns, and principally the Gemayels, as disruptive of the Lebanese integrity Israel has professed to uphold. He is also critical of the Syrians, who first sought to help the Christians against the onslaught of the PLO and its radical allies among the Shiites, and then turned their guns upon their erstwhile allies, the Christians, lest they become too strong and less pliable to Syrian dictates. The author dredges up Moshe Sharett's diaries, published in 1950, which purport to show Ben- Gurion's "secret" schemes to cooperate with and assist the Maronite Christians, generally sympathetic to Is- rael, from being engulfed and dominated by an in- creasingly growing Moslem majority. (This disclosure assumed special relevance with the publication of an article in the Jerusalem Post on July 2 by Benny Morris, who had allegedly uncovered Foreign Ministry docu- ments, recently de- classified, showing an Israel-Phalangist relation- ship going back to 1948. This "relationship," the documents reveal, never developed beyond the talking-stage.) Randal's predisposition to "expose" Israel as an ag- gressive, power-hungry state is glaringly in evi- dence when he conjures up a conspiratorial arrange- ment between Syria and Is- rael to partition Lebanon into Syrian and Israeli spheres of military control and "jurisdiction." As the senior foreign correspondent of the Washington Post, whose coverage of Israel has been notoriously hostile, Randal has apparently chosen to toe the line charted by his superiors. The author is at his re- portorial best in describ- ing his personal encounters and experi- ences with the major characters involved in Lebanon's savage cycle of violence and retribu- tion. Equally interesting is his recital of the chec- kered history of the Maronit,es, who claim to be the descendants of the Fully Adjustable Hospital Beds LHIL7,11 1 1 1r1 • 11 Full Selection of Canes 24-Hr.
