THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

WXYZ Radio Agrees to Meeting on Talk Show Issue

(Continued from Page 1)
wrath on The Jews News for
publishing the statement.
Talk show host Kevin
Joyce, who was also named
in the ADL-JCCouncil let-
ter, advised inquirers who
asked for the text of the
statement to call The
Jewish News with their re-
quest. He did not deal with

the issue on his show.
But Scott resorted to
questioning the morality
and journalistic honor of
The Jewish News during
his program rather than
discuss the charges
leveled at him and his sta-
tion. Scott's anger was
especially expressed in
denials that he was an

repaid to the U.S. govern-
ment; in this year alone Is-
rael will pay back $1 billion
and even more next year.

The article also presents
the cash transfer ar-
rangements which the
United States and Israel
have worked out (in Eco-
nomic Support Funds) as
something extraordinary or
secretive. Quite the con-
trary, these ESF ar-
rangements have been dis-
cussed in public Congres-
sional hearings and are
clearly spelled out in U.S.
law and public bilateral
agreements. They are a
means of saving both coun-
tries millions of dollars in
unnecessary paperwork
that would be involved in
documenting what both
governments already know:
that Israel's civilian im-
ports to the U.S. are twice
what it receives in ESF as-
sistance, so the money is
clearly spent in this coun-
try.

McCartney blatantly dis-
regards the fact that the re-
port finds no fault with U.S.
aid to Israel. In fact, the re-
port cites the benefits to
U.S. interests, which are

substantial.
The report also reviews
the economic and secu-
rity problems of Israel
that necessitate the levels
of U.S. aid, including Is-
rael's growing debt bur-
den and the increased
military sales to its Arab
neighbors. McCartney, of
course, makes no men-
tion of these facts.
By highlighting the addi-
tional costs involved in
Israeli forces
from the Sinai, McCartney
fails to mention that Israel,
not the United States, is ob-
liged to pay those additional
costs. In fact, Israeli tax-
payers will have to pay over
$4 billion for that rede-
ployment.
The article treats the
$172 million in military
construction equipment
that was left behind by the
United States as though it
were an aid windfall for Is-
rael. The truth is something
else. Israel requested that
the U.S. not sell that
equipment in Israel for eco-
nomic reasons. The United
States decided that it was
not worth bringing the used
equipment back to the U.S.
and instead left it with the
Israelis.

In Scott's defense, Louis

The Jewish News re-

about "The Jewish News

struck a special Medal of Valor which will be
awarded to all registered Assembly participants
