Campaign for Aged Facilities Reaches $4.5 Million
Pledges totalling $4.5
million for the new Fleis-
chman Residence and
Blumberg Plaza were an-
nounced at a major gifts
meeting last week in the
home of Irwin and Bethea
Green.
The announcement re-
presented a giant step in
fund-raising for the com-
plex for the elderly under
construction at Maple and
Drake roads in West Bloom-
field. Completion of con-
struction is scheduled for
January.
Paul Borman, campaign
chairman, who announced
the totals, said the response
that evening reflects the
special concern and under-
standing of the Detroit
Jewish community. He
shared that conviction with
Dr. Conrad Giles, vice
president of the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, who under-
lined the importance of the
undertaking sponsored by
the Jewish Home for Aged.
Chairman of the Federation
Task Force on Non-
Institutionalized Services
for the Elderly, Dr. Giles
said this project, in coopera-
tion with Federation, repre-
sents a total community ef-

fort.
The 106 units of the
Fleischman Residence,
along with the special
features of the Blumberg
Plaza, have been de-
signed by experts in the
area of environment for
the aged. The plaza in-
cludes a synagogue, ac-
tivity rooms, dining room
and "nosh nook," gift
shop and music room, as
well as outdoor gardens.
Leonard Simons, who
chaired the meeting, re-
called the names and events
— as well as lighter mo-
ments — of his 46 years on
the board of the Jewish
Home for Aged.
Among those to whom he
paid tribute were Gus
Newman, at 90 the one man
who has served on the board
longer than Simons (Mr.
Newman's death last week
is reported in this issue); the
late Al Borman, whose son
Paul chairs the RJE fund-
raising • campaign; and the
late Ira Sonnenblick, the
Home's director for almost
30 years, who died two
weeks ago.
Simons, former JHA vice
president and chairman of
the executive committee,
introduced Robert A. Stein-
berg, president of the Home,
who reviewed the long
planning process that has
gone into the Fleischman
Residence for Jewish El-
derly. "I have never felt
more -a part of a concept
than I have with this new
facility," he said. "I know

Abu Nidal Linked
to European
Terror Incidents
PARIS (JTA) — French
police are convinced that
the extremist terrorist gang
headed by Abu Nidal was
responsible for the series of
attacks on Jewish targets in
Western Europe during the
summer of 1982 as well as
the murder of Issam Sar-
tawi, a Palestine Liberation
Organization moderate who
was gunned down in Lisbon
last April 10.
The police reached that
conclusion after an inves-
tigating magistrate and the
chief inspector of the Paris
police visited Al Awat
Youssef, the prime suspect
in the Sartawi killing who is
being held in Lisbon. He is
an admitted member of the
Nidal gang.
want to be a partner in it."
He said the Residence
and its adjoining Blum-
berg Plaza will provide
the interim step in hous-
ing for elderly persons
who do not require
round-the-clock medical
care (as at the Home)
but who seek specialized
services that are not
available at Jewish Fed-
eration Apartments. He
said there is a need for
more such housing, as
evidenced by the number
of names on the agencies'
waiting lists.
Paul Borman had high
praise for the major gifts
committee, including Mar-
vin H. Goldman and Arthur
