Israeli Convict Set Free

AKKO (JNI) — Amos
Baranes, one of the most in-
famous convicted murder-
ers in Israeli history, spent
his first Shabat in more
than eight years as a free
man June 25. The campaign
for Baranes' release from
prison was led by Shinui
MK Amnon Rubinstein.
Baranes was convicted of
the 1974 murder of IDF
soldier Rahel Heller and
sentenced to life imprison-
ment. The conviction was
based mostly on Baranes'
confession, which Rubins-
tein maintains was ob-
tained under questional cir-
cumstances.

Baranes has since argued
his innocence and battled
for re-trial based on his as-
sertion that he was framed
by the police.
