Friday, July 1, 1983 31 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS The Best of Everything) "THEATER UNDER THE STARS" . . . always an intriguing thought . . . is here again . . . as one hotel's loss is another hotel's great gain. Nancy Gurwin opened in "South Pacific" at Botsford Inn . . . Grand River and Eight Mile . . . and if the other northwest hotel had spies there, the owners or operators are probably banging their heads against the wall for not grabbing it when the opportunity was available. "South Pacific" . . . the Rodgers and Hammerstein and Joshua Logan Pulitzer Prize winning musical .. . opened in The Gardens at John Anhut's Botsford Inn . . . to the delight of so many. The love of stage by its cast of 30 is most evident . . . on the patio with his- toric Botsford Inn, aged trees and wicker fence serving as most effective backgrounds ... The show begins in daylight and when darkness sets in, the lighting effect is excellently done with wonderful spotlight work on this very fine cast. "South Pacific" starring Nancy Gurwin as Nellie Forbush, Navy nurse, and Lou Emmert as Emile de Becque, French plantation owner, is superb . . . so very professional . . . As usual, Nancy is her same wonder- ful self . . . Lou has the deep voice of Enzio Pinza, who did the original part on Broadway with Mary Mar- tin. Seating is in the grassed Botsford Inn Garden .. . with the patio stage about 18 inches above ground. Queen Nancy sings, acts, dances and does little bits of comedy . . . all of which have made her this area's pre- mier feminine star. The familiar music of "South Pacific" "Some Enchanted Eve- ning," "There Is Nothing Like A Dame," "Bali Hal," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," "I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy," "Younger Than Springtime," "Happy Talk," "Honey Bun," "This Nearly Was Mine" ... is wonderful ... and done with sounds of hap- piness. The cast feels what they are doing . . . and Nancy's biggest venture yet . . . does a superb job on an American classic. The costuming is perfect . . . by Nancy Brassert .. . and set designing by Lee Ayres so choice in its simplicity. Edgar Guest III does a dual role in "South Pacific" . . . He's the director . . . and also very capably plays the part of Seabee wheeler- dealer Luther Billis. As in the Broadway and other "South Pacific" shows, Bloody Mary is somewhat of a scene stealer . . . Judie Cochill does an excellent job. Nancy and her cast put on a most enjoyable show . . . It is so important that everyone feels his or her part . . . to maintain suc- cessful rapport between personnel and audience. The musical accompani- ment does not go unnoticed . . . especially dual pianos played by Musical Director Barbara Gowans and Asso- ciate Musical Director David Wilson . . . Eleanor Struble is on bass and David Minnich on percussion. "South Pacific" by Nancy Gurwin Productions . . . at Botsford Inn . . . is per- formed every Thursday and Sunday evenings . . . with cash bar available prior to performances . . . This is not dinner theater, so folks can eat as they choose or dine at Botsford Inn itself . . . Tic- kets are only $10 for the over two-hour show. Nancy, by the way, will bring the entire company to 12-Oaks Mall, 7 p.m. July 26 and 27, for 30 minutes of numbers from the show. Botsford Inn is the oldest in Michigan still providing_ food and lodging . . . built in 1836 as a home . . . In 1841 it was converted into a tavern and a stagecoach stop . . . Botsford's property is on the National Register of Historic Places of U.S. Dept. of Interior. This is a showplace .. . and quite natural that "South Pacific" should be appearing there . . . An- tiques are galore . . . many from Henry Ford's Fairlane home and country estate .. . Henry and Clara Ford owned Botsford from 1924 to 1951 . . . and it still con- tains many of their furnish- ings . . . John Anhut then acquired it . . . and has also been its innkeeper. "South Pacific" by Nancy Gurwin and her excellent cast and staff is true family entertainment. As Leonard Meldman put it during intermis- sion, "It's even better than I thought it would be." ... We didn't see Leonard after the show but his reaction must have been much greater following the first act ... "South Pacific" by Nancy Gurwin not only keeps people glued to their seats with joyful hand clapping ... it also prom- otes a nostalgic love. To do "South Pacific" poorly would be a tragedy . . . and sinful . . . This has happened . . . to shaking heads of remembering audiences. However, Nancy Gurwin and cast can be proud . . their way is certainly the right way.
