LOOKS LIKE DON
VARGO is getting back

into the nitery restaurant
game ... He has purchased
a wareho
use on Franklin off
Atwater on the river,
downtown Detroit . ' . and
will convert it into a dining
spot . . . The off-water locale
is an ideal spot ... espe-
cially with soft whispers
getting a bit louder about
gambling coming to Detroit.
IT'LL BE at Southfield
High . . . July 17 . . . and one
of the nicest things to come
Southfield's way in a long
time . . . annual Soup Kettle
and Festival by Chef's 200
Club and March of Dimes
. . . Already set are about 24
"chariots" plus relays . . . re-
freshments, games, etc.
Kettle pulling partici-
pants are restaurants .. .
Purveyors hold the foot
races. . . which have been
won the last two years by
Lou Popper's Empire Pack-
ing.
It's a fun afternoon for the
family . . . and help for a
wonderful cause . . . Plan to
make a day of it . . . Admis-
sion is only $1 . . . with stubs
drawn for prizes . . . trip to
Toronto and oodles of
dinners for two.

annual Summer Dining
Sale, already starting, he
talks mostly about experi-

pride with him . . . One of
his top waitresses, June
Caylor, came with Harry
from Dexter . . . Three of his
countermen, Bob Winkler,
Herbie Showalter and
Merle Coleman, are all ex-
Darby-ites . . . Merle was
also in the deli biz with
brother Tom .. . Harry's
head chef, Eli Karavidas,
was at Darby's five years
and the last 15 at Original
Esquire.

at Troy Hilton Inn,
Stephenson and Crooks .. .
Band this evening and next
week is called Trinidad
Exotic Steel Band . . . play-
ing same kind of music . . .
calypso, reggae, pops, etc.
ELLEN WOLFE was our
representative at opening of
Meadow Brook Musical
Festival . . . and writes
. . . "Opening of the
Meadow Brook Music Fes-
tival for the 1983 season
was a repeat performance of
the very first Meadow
Brook Music Festival 20
years ago. A carnation was
given the ladies entering
the grounds.
"Maestro Sixten Ehrling,
who conducted the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra which
performed, was given a
plaque for outstanding con-
tributions to the Music Fes-
tival as founding artistic di-
rector. The audience was
startled momentarily when
in the middle of the Brahms
Double Concerto an over-
head light exploded.
Neither soloist, Gordon
Staples and Italo Babini,
was ruffled and the show
went on without a pause. It
was a beautiful evening and
very fine concert.
"Farmington Hills home
of Norman and Malka
Wechsler was pre-concert
soiree . . . with concert goers
Larry and Arlene Wenokur,
Mickey and Barbara
Wenokur, O.D. and Dolores
Silverstein, Dick and Shir-
ley Zirkin, and Harold and
Cindy Daitsch."
