IT WAS THE late 1930s
and early 1940s . . . The
gruesome Nazi war
machine was purging
Europe as only an inhuman
monster could.
Along with so many
others, a young Jewish girl
had seen her mother, father
and the entire family except
her . . . including five other
children . . . put to death in
the gas chambers of Au-
schwitz . . . A large family of
uncles, aunts and cousins
was reduced to eight cousins
now living in Israel.
Rose Perl was saved only
because of being a strong
young girl . . . She was in
concentration camps at Au-
schwitz, Bergen-Belsen, etc.
. . . taken from Auschwitz to
a work camp . . . and later
freed by the English at
Bergen-Belsen.
In Poland, a young man
named Irving Guttman
had also seen his mother,
father and four of their
six children murdered by
the Nazis . . . A brother
now lives in Israel . . . Irv-
ing was in concentration
camps ... escaped and
hid in the woods until
freed by Russian under-
ground.
Fate would decree that
they should meet at a dis-
placed persons camp in
Germany after the war . . .

fall in love . . . and get mar-
ried.
They came to America in
1949 . . . where Irving spent
three months in New York
looking for a job . . . Then to
Detroit, where Irving
worked at Dodge Main .. .
and after being laid off, in a
tool and die shop until 1954.
Although neither had
been in the restaurant
business . . . fate would also
have it that they should
open a delicatessen in Ham-
tramck . . . This they did on
Yeaman Street in 1954. . . .
buying the old Seltzer's eat-
ery . . . and changing the
name to Irving's . . . with
hours of five days a week, 5
a.m. to 6 p.m. . . . Rose
taught herself how to cook
. . . and Irving was coun-
terman, cutting corned beef
by hand.
Those hours and "the
easy life" changed nine
years ago when they took
over a little lumber yard
on Greenfield just north
of 11 Mile Road . . . and
built Irving's
Delicatessen-Restaurant
. . . with its true, fresh din-
ing . . . six days a week .. .
including dinner hours.
When the new Irving's
Delicatessen-Restaurant
opened, it sat 136 . . . in
three sectors . . . two with
padded booths . . . and one
with padded booths and four
tables . . . The dark panel-
ing is accented by deep
orange padding in booths
. . . each separated by wood
dividers with open designs
. . . whirling fans to gently
help circulate air ... low-
hanging, decorative chan-
deliers in the middle sector
and another style in back
with five outer bulbs . . .
lighting conducive to inti-
mate softness.
Irving's is very much un-
like old-time delicatessens
insofar as decor and moder-
nistic array is concerned .. .
Those of yesteryears had no
such beautiful wall paper-
ing . . . no air conditioning
. . too many odors . . . and
more noise than efficient
bustle of today.
Rose and Irving are as-
sisted by a son, Seymour,
who worked in a California
restaurant and returned
here . . . Another son, Jerry,
left this year and is now a
financial consultant for In-
vestors Diversified Serv-
ices.
Two of the waitresses,
Diane Zotorski and sister
Eileen Oniska, were also
with Irving's in Ham-
tramck . . . Bette Fleet-
wood has been at the
Southfield locale since it
opened ... Same for
Margot Thompson who
works evenings and
Saturday and Sunday .. .
Alma Hill and Yetta
Laxer are five-year gals,
and Angie Drallos was a
many-year stalwart wait-
ress at another northwest
eatery before coming to
Irving's.
The employees at Irving's
pride themselves on cour-
tesy, efficiency and atten-
