Young Israel President Pledges to Fill 'Vacuum' in Leadership

SPRING GLEN, N.Y.
(JTA) — The president of
the National Council of
Young Israel, Harold
Jacobs, pledged here that it
is the role of the Young Is-
rael movement to "fill the
vacuum" that currently
exists of "true Jewish com-
munal leadership."
"The selfless and commu-
nity spirited men and
women who were among the
Jewish people's finest tradi-
tions have become increas-
ingly rare in our times,"
Jacobs told some 500 per-
sons gathered for the
three-day Young Israel na-
tional convention.
"Community service is
increasingly viewed more
as an opportunity for career

building rather than a sac-
red obligation."
Jacobs, whose remarks
were made in his inau-
gural address as he was
re-elected to a third term
as president of the Or-
thodox synagogue organ-
ization, criticized the ac-
tions of "too many
American Jewish lead-
ers" who did not stand
steadfast with Israel dur-
ing the "Peace for
Galilee" operation last
summer.
Meanwhile, Malcolm
Hoenlein, executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Commu-
nity Relations Council of
New York (JCRCNY),
speaking at a session on
"Jewish Political Power,"
declared that "Jews have a
double stake in taking part
in the political process in
this country."
Hoenlein outlined both
the specific issues of concern
to the Jewish community
and the need to strengthen
through active participa ;
tion the democratic process
and "the rights which we
enjoy in this country."

No M.E. Plans
Set for Habib

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Reagan Administra-
tion said there were no im-
mediate plans for special
U.S. envoy Philip Habib to
be sent back to the Middle
East in an effort to persuade
the Syrians to withdraw
their troops from Lebanon.
State Department deputy
spokesman Alan Romberg
maintained however that
Habib continues to remain
engaged in Middle East de-
velopments.

"We need to be strong ad-
vocates to Israel, Soviet
Jewry and other interna-
tional and domestic issues
which directly concern the
Jewish people," Hoenlein
said. "Furthermore, the
rights of free speech and
political expression which
we enjoy in this country are
best protected by their vig-
orous exercise by all citi-
zens. We as Jews, who have
often suffered the most in
countries that lack these
freedoms should be most
vigilant in their use and
protection."
In a related develop-
ment, Rabbi Walter
Wurzburger, past
president of the Rabbini-
cal Council of America,

asserted that despite the
"moral and political di-
lemmas" confronting the
search for a permanent
solution to the West
Bank, "we must eschew
dogmatic absolutes."
"The issues are so com-
plex that they cannot be re-
solved by recourse to
- simplistic principles — be
they the historic and reli-
gious rights of Jews to the
land of Israel, or the claims
to self-determination on the
part of the Arab popula-
tions," Wurzburger said in a
debate on the fate of Judea
and Samaria at the three-
day convention of the Na-
tional Council of Young Is-
rael.

Young Israel of Staten Is-
land said, on the other hand,
that a more aggressive as-
sertion of Jewish rights to
those lands must be made.
"Israel has already made
its sacrifices for peace —
now we must wait for others
to make a similar commit-
ment to peace." Marcus said
Jews "must be allowed to
live anywhere on the land
of Biblical Israel, including
Judea and Samaria, and we
must realize that further
appeasement will not bring
about rapprochement."
Meanwhile, Dr. Fred
Rosner, an internation-
ally renowned specialist
on Jewish bioethics,
termed artificial hearts
such as the one which
was recently implanted
in Barney - Clark to be
"morally preferable to
human hearts trans-
planted after the death
into living patients."
Speaking at the Young
Israel convention, Dr.
Rosner explained that,
"Since Jewish law requires
the physician to do all in his
power to save a human life,
even to the extent of violat-
ing most of the command-
ments when necessary, it
fully approves the use of
such artificial devices as the
mechanical heart pump

vps

that was recently used to
extend the life of Dr. Barney
Clark."
