(between 12 & 13 Mile Roads) "Life Lines" by Joseph Viertel (Pocket Books) is now in paperback. The author acquaints us with a very realistic view of what the daily life in the Soviet Union is like; abhor- rent and unbelievable to those of us who have lived in freedom all our lives. In his acknowledgements he thanks by name those from the Soviet Union who have succeeded in emigrat- ing and "those who must remain nameless because they still languish in the USSR, waiting." His book seems to be written with great authenticity. Yuri Karpeyko is a Russian war hero, member of the Party, ac- ting director of a hospi- tal, a professor of medicine at the institute — and a Jew. He has al- ways thought of himself as a Russian, but gov- ernment policies are be- coming more flagrantly anti-Semitic and he now finds himself and his fam- ily prey to disaster. The only solution for them is to get out of the Soviet Union. In a race against time, they seek the aid of their previously un- known American cousins. Martin and Jenny Singer are a wealthy, influential Jewish-American couple into whose life comes Kar- peyko's appeal for help. They do everything that money and influence can accomplish, but the "wait and see" methods of diplo- macy are not swift enough to supply the urgent action that it needed. The Singers contact their Israeli cousins for further help. Rachel Aron and her grandson Gideon are Is- raelis who are dedicated to the welfare of their country, from smuggling in aliens when the British were in control, to the present day fighting and raising of funds through the United Jewish Appeal. This branch of Yuri Karpeyko's family has its own ideas of how to help him and his family es- cape from Russia. Viertel has done a su- perb job of storytelling. Without being obvious, he has described what it is like to be Jewish in our time and how the mean- ing of being Jewish var- ies from country to coun- try. His characters are believable human beings of many dimensions. He has also woven into the Four Regions Cited by UJA NEW YORK — The Jewish communities of Cin- cinnati, Denver, South County, Fla. and Fort Worth, Tex. have been named winners of the United Jewish Appeal's Pinchas Sapir Awards for outstanding 1982 campaign achievements. The awards were pre- sented at the recent UJA national leadership confer- ence in Washington, D.C. book, the background of three generations of fam- ily, the roots from which this generation must grow. Best of all, the last quar- ter of the book becomes a can't-put-it-down, thrilling adventure story. It is great summer reading!
