Blanchard Tells JNF Dinner: U.S. 'Positive Toward Israel

By HEIDI PRESS
Michigan Gov. James J.
Blanchard said Wednesday
evening that he observed
some positive changes in
the Reagan Administration
toward Israel.
Speaking to nearly 550
persons at the annual
Jewish National Fund Tree
of Life Award Testimonial
dinner at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, Gov. Blanchard said
one of the changes he ob-
served is that the U.S.
agreed to sell technological
'data for the building of the
Lavie jet fighter to Israel.

Another of what he called
"positive changes" toward
Israel is that the U.S. no
longer opposes Congres-
sional efforts to give aid to
Israel.
"I believe relations
have turned a dramatic
corner. I believe the Ad-
ministration should re-
ceive some recognition
for this."
Alluding to his experi-
ence as a Congressman,
Gov. Blanchard continued
on the topic of U.S.-Israeli
relations by stating that
"the, truth is that all of the

Administrations in recent
years have had a Mideast
midlife crisis."
He listed what he called
four reasons for that evalu-
ation:
• "Politicians don't like to
get involved with conflict";
• "The use of electronic
media tends to focus on
what's being said rather
than the history of the
region";
• Energy; and
• "Politicians don't like to
take unpopular stands in
the world community."
Blanchard called for "vig-
ilance" to what Congress
and the Administration are
doing in the field of foreign
and economic policy and
made the following recom-
mendations:
• "Elect Presidents
who have demonstrated
experience in foreign pol-
icy";
• "We need a comprehen-
sive energy policy";
• "We can insist that our
politicians and newspeople,
especially broadcasters,
know history — get the facts
straight."
He concluded by saying
that it is the "human re-
source, all of us working to-
gether . . . to change the
course of events and to
