(Continued from Page 1)
the Detroit Yiddish schools,
and they are always among
the most active participants
in Yiddish language confer-
ences, in sessions which
have been conducted in Is-
rael, Canada and the
United States.
Prof. Gershon Winer of
Bar-Ilan University, who
supervises the advance-
ment of Yiddish studies at
the university, announced
the following formula that
has been set up for the
Moshe and Sarah Friedman
Endowed Fund for Yiddish
Teacher Education:
The Moshe and Soreh
Friedman Foundation (or
Chair) at Bar-Ilan Univer-
sity for Yiddish Teacher
Education will sponsor and
support the following pro-
grams:
• Courses in coopera-
tion with the chair in
Yiddish language and lit-
erature toward a bacca-
laureate degree and pro-
fessional diploma in the
teaching of Yiddish;
• Scholarships for stu-
dents enrolled in the Yid-
dish teachers' program;
• Publication of a basic
Yiddish textbook and re-
quired educational material
for the study of Yiddish lan-
guage in Israel high schools;
• Publicizing and promot-
ing the Yiddish teachers'
program through the
media.
The courses in Yiddish
education will be launched
in October 1983 with a
minimum of 15 students
and augmented each of the
two successive years by the
same number. The program
will be inaugurated with
the participation of gov-
ernment and academic per-
sonalities from Israel as
well as representatives of
the U.S. Embassy in ac-
cordance with general prac-
tice on such occasions.
Communication will be
maintained with Jewish
communities abroad, par-
ticularly Latin and South
America, to encourage the
local Jewish- agencies in di-
recting students to the Yid-
dish program.
The Foundation (or
Chair) will cooperate with

the World Committee for
Yiddish in promoting the
study of Yiddish in Israel
high schools.
In order to fund the
above activities, the ini-
tial endowment of the
Foundation will be au-
gmented by contribu-
tions from other sources
and the entire endow-
ment fund will remain in-
tact while the annual
interest will be utilized
for the designated pur-
poses.
To assure compliance
with the terms of the
Friedman grant, a special
committee consisting of a
member of the Friedman
family, Prof. Gershon
Winer, and a representative
of the World Committee for
Yiddish will review the an-
nual activities of the fund
and report to the Friedman
family.
The Friedmans selected
their children, Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Sorkowitz, to be
their representatives on the
committee that will review
the annual activities of the
Friedman pedagogic pro-
gram at Bar-Ilan U.
The Friedmans have al-
ready provided a grant for
Yiddish learning at the
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies of the United He-
brew Schools.
Lifelong interest in and
support of YIVO and the
movement's cumulative
programs have encouraged
communal support for Yid-
dish archivist services.

former president of the
Sholem Aleichem Institute,
which also had the active
teaching services of Mrs.
Friedman.
Friedman scholarships
for those involved in Yid-
dish literature and assis-
tance to Yiddish authors are
among the couple's many
generosities. They are sup-
porters of the Herzliya Yid-
dish and Hebrew Seminary
and the Jewish People's
University of the Air.

popular as a reader of Yid-

turef before scores of local

and has devotedly con-
ducted the efforts to encour-
age Yiddish writers and
publishers. She was secre-
tary of the Sholem
