The annual event was oc- casion for acclaim for the labor ranks in Israel and the services of the trade union as a democratizing force in the Middle East. The dinner was con- ducted under the toastmastership of Wil- liam C. Marshall, chair- man of the Michigan AFL-CIO and the Michi- gan Trade Union Council for Histadrut. The relationship of the ' trade unions in Israel and the United States was the theme of the address of the guest speaker, Anthony S. Earl, governor of Wiscon- sin, who was introduced by Hugh Jarvis, active in the organizing committee for the Blanchard dinner. Gov. Earl, commending Blanchard's "courage in his actions and convictions, listed the Michigan Gover- nor's devotion to Israel's needs among his high qual- ities. Gov. Blanchard went into detail, in addition to outlin- ing his interest in Histadrut and in the Israel trade union movement and he reaffirmed his deep interest in assuring a protected Is- rael. A resolution of com- mendation for Gov. Blan- chard and his pro- grammatic activities was presented on behalf of the Detroit City Council by Council President Erma Henderson. Participants in the pro- gram included Rabbi M. Robert Syme, Rev. Frank D. Gentile, Cantor Max Shimansky and Dearborn Councilman Duane Yinger. An impressive feature of the dinner program was the 12-minute film which indicated the ex- tent of Arab-Jewish cooperation in Israel in- spired by Histadrut, with emphasis on the role of 300,000 Israeli Arabs who are members of the His- tadrut Trade Unions. Keynoting the event, in a brief definition of the His- tadrut program and of the Footlockers and Dorm Size amal Institute which is ad- vancing Israel's educational activities, Morris Lieber- man, in his address of gratitude to Gov.
