On June 28, Jews the
world over will begin the
sad period of 21 days (from
the 17th of Tammuz until
the Ninth of Av) known in
tradition as the "three
weeks."
The earlier date, accord-
ing to the Jerusalem Tal-
mud, is a communal fast,
commemorating the
breaching of the walls of
Jerusalem by Nebukadnez-
zar in 586 BCE as well as by
the Roman, Titus in the
year 70 CE. The Babylonian
Talmud differs, accepting
the date in Jeremiah as the
correct one, while insist-
ing the destruction of the
Second Temple to be the
more important of the two.
The 17th of Tammuz saw
no less than four major
catastrophes in Jewish his-
tory. The Mishna tells us
that Moses broke the tablets
of the Torah; the daily sacri-
ficial offering in the Sol-
omon's Temple ceased; the
barbarian Apostomos
burned the scrolls of the
Torah in the sanctuary; and
Apostomos set up an idol in
the same place.
The 17th of Tammuz,
which is a sad day pre-
iently, is supposed
change during the Mes-
sianic Era, into a day of
happiness and celebra-
tion.
The special three weeks of
mourning are called "Bein
Ha-Mezarim (between the
narrows or straits, i.e. the
two fasts). During this
period, it is forbidden to
celebrate weddings; listen

Mourning Period Explained

LONDON (ZINS) —
Anti-Semitism on the part
of the Christian world acts
as a deterrent, preventing
Jews from converting to a
new faith, according to the
Bishop of Birmingham Dr.
V. Monte Montefiore, the
most notable convert in
England, in a speech he
made in a Protestant
church.
The roots of Christian
anti-Semitism, he said, are
directly traceable to the
New Testament.
Dr. Montefiore is a de-
scendant of the famous
Sephardic family whose
most famous personality
was Moses Montefiore, the
distinguished 16th Century
Jewish philanthropist.

Egyptians Warm
to Israeli Tourists

CAIRO (ZINS) —Haaretz
reporter Amos Alon be-
lieves that the average
Egyptian is ignoring the of-
ficial anti-Israel campaign
in Egyptian newspapers.
Alon reports that Israeli
tourists are treated warmly
by Egyptians during their
visits and that -even intel-
lectuals who criticized the
Israeli-Egyptian peace
treaty believe that the pre-
sent coolness in relations
between the two countries is
only temporary.

entertainment; buy or wear
new clothes; swim for
pleasure; eat new fruits
over which the blessing of
"Sheheyanu" is pro-
nounced; shave or cut one's
hair; eat meat or drink wine
(except during the Sab-
bath).
Depending on the various
traditions of the many scat-
tered Jewish communities
around the world, other re-
strictions may apply as
well. Among other things,
the Shulchan Arukh pro-
hibits teachers from "beat-
ing" their pupils during this
time.
