. NEW YORK — Through
August, gifts and pledges by
new contributors to the
Jewish Braille Institute of
America will be matched on
a one-to-three basis by a
challenge grant from the
National Endowment for
the Humanities.
Dr. Jane Evans, JBI
president, said all money
raised in this manner will
be used to expand JBI's free
library loan collection of
audio cassettes and to pro-
vide its services to more
members of the visually-
impaired elderly popula-
tion.
The federal funding is
being made possible by an
extension of a three-year
challenge grant that was
due to expire last year. To
date, JBI has raised
$360,000, which resulted in
an additional $120,000 from
the National Endowment
for the Humanities.
All contributions to
JBI are tax-deductible.
Gifts and pledges should
be sent to JBI, 110 E. 30th
St., New York 10016.
During the past year
alone, Dr. Evans reported,
JBI's library circulation
rose by over 40 percent, and
the institute's collection of
audio cassettes in English,
Hebrew, Yiddish and other
languages grew from 43,000
to 90,000.
Library materials, all
available on free loan, in-
clude Jewish cultural and
religious writings, articles
and books on public affairs,
Torah portions and prayer-
books, news from Israel,
children's books, novels and
short stories, books on his-
tory and philosophy and
materials to help children
prepare for Bar and Bat
Mitzva.
Founded in 1931, the JBI
offers to blind and visually-
impaired persons 'in the
United States, Israel and 40
other countries a wide
range of free services.
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
Israelis have avoided cal-
ling a recent Soviet liaison
group's visit to Israel a
friendship association.
The highly-controversial
visit began with some anti-
Israeli statements by the
delegates, who only met
with Israeli Communists
during their visit. The
Soviet visit followed visits
by delegations from Cuba,
Hungary and Czechos-
lovakia.

PARIS (JTA) — U.S. Sec-
retary of State George
Shultz accused the Soviet
Union last week of increas-
ing tension in the Middle
East by sending advanced
weaponry and military ex-
perts to Syria.
"Any development which
contributes to putting more
foreign troops into Lebanon
than there were at the end
of the hostilities is an un-
welcome development and
only adds to existing ten-
sions," Shultz said in brief-
ing reporters on the eve of
the two-day NATO Council
conference here. "It is very
undesirable to have more
forces in the Bekaa valley"
of Lebanon.
The Secretary said the
Palestinians should be
encouraged to negotiate
with Israelis "so that they
may express their legiti-
mate rights and their de-
sires." He refused to corn-
ment on the split between
the various factions of the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.

MONTREAL (JTA) —
The 100th anniversary of
the Yiddish Theater in
North America and the 25th
anniversary of the Yiddish
theater in Canada were
jointly celebrated by a per-
formance of "Wandering
Starf," a dramatization of
Shalom Aleichem's novel of
the turn of the century
fledgling Yiddish drama.
Dora Wassemann, direc-
tor of the Montreal Yiddish
Theater since it began 25
years ago, sought to create
such a theater since she
emigrated from the Soviet
Union 30 years ago. Until
the establishment of the
Montreal Yiddish Theater,
all Yiddish performances
had come from the United
States.
