550 at Detroit Seminary Dinner

By HEIDI PRESS

Nearly 550 persons
attended the first city-wide
dinner on behalf of the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America Wednes-
day at Cong..Shaarey Zedek
at which Gov. and Mrs.
James J. Blanchard re-
ceived the seminary's Eter-
nal Light Award.
The dinner also was the
occasion to pay tribute to
five persons from the five
major Conservative Jewish
congregations, for their con-
tributions to their syna-
gogues, the seminary and to
Jewish causes.
Honorees and their con-
gregations were: Stanley
Berger, Cong. Beth Shalom;
Arthur Boschan, Cong.
Bnai Moshe; Harry Laker,
Cong. Beth Achim; Irving
Laker, Cong. Shaarey
Zedek; and Cantor Larry
Vieder, Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue. The presentations to
the honorees were.made by
the respective rabbis of the
congregations.
Guest speaker Dr. Ger-
son Cohen, chancellor of
the seminary, who pre-
sented the award to Gov.
Blanchard, and his wife
in absentia, quoted from
the Psalms in his address.
He referred to a phrase
"sing unto the Lord a new
song," which he said ap-
peared several times
throughout the Psalms
and which he parap-
hrased for the evening to

read "sing the old in new
terms and sing the new in
old terms," referring to
the seminary's role in
providing for Jewish
continuity.
"You have continuity of
change, but a connection
with the past," Dr. Cohen
said. "One comes and is nur-
tured by a tradition that re-
news itself."
Dr. Cohen spoke of the
seminary as a "great in-
stitution of scholarship"
and talked about its contri-
butions to Jewish schol-
arship throughout the
world and particularly in
the United States, where
seminary graduates have
helped develop departments
of Hebrew at U.S. univer-
sities.
"Your seminary is an
agency for the recovery of
the past," he concluded.
On behalf of the semi-
nary, David B. Hermelin,
a member of the dais,
welcomed the guests and
announced that more
than $150,000 in contri-
butions were realized
over and above the
dinner receipts.
In his response upon re-
ceiving the coveted award,
Gov. Blanchard said he was
"deeply honored" and said "I
feel at home" appearing at
the synagogue. He added
anecdotally, "I've been here
for weddings, Bar Mitzvas,
Bat Mitzvas -- I've been
here more than quite a few
of you."
In his brief remarks he al-
luded to the "tough time for
our society, our world and
our state," referring to eco-
nomic problems, world-wide
conflicts and the Middle
East. He also thanked his
supporters in his Congres-
sional compaigns and his
bid for the governorship. He

concluded by praising the
seminary.
"I think the Jewish
Theological Seminary is
engaged in what has to be
done . . . to transfer the
truth."
Dinner co-chairman
Sharon Hart opened the
program with a Yiddish
anecdotal introduction
and welcome and I. Mur-
ray Jacobs, co-chairman
with Mrs. Hart, intro-
duced Dr. Cohen.
Rabbi Robert Abramson,
headmaster of Hillel Day
School, brought greetings
from the Conservative rab-
bis of Detroit and Leonard
Baron brought greetings
from the Michigan Region,
United Synagogue of
America.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Shaarey Zedek recited the
invocation, and Cantor
Louis Klein of Cong. Bnai
Moshe chanted the Birkat
Hamazon.
