Swedish Leader
Pledges to Aid
Troubled Jewry

NEW YORK — Swedish
Prime Minister Olof Palme
told the World Jewish Con-
gress (WJC) last month that
his government would
make an effort to alleviate
the plight of endangered
Jewish communities
around the world through
contacts with the govern-
ments concerned. •
Palme undertook this
commitment during a pri-
vate meeting with a delega-
tion from the European
Branch of the WJC then
holding its annual session
in Stockholm.
At a meeting, Dr.
Maurice Grynfogel, chair-
man of the WJC European
Branch, who led the delega-
tion, expressed concern over
the recent welcome which
Mr. Palme accorded to Yas-
sir Arafat, the PLO leader,
in Stockholm. Mr. Palme
stated that he had used the
occasion to urge the PLO to
recognize Israel.

WASHINGTON —
Representatives of several
major American women's
organizations met at Bnai
Brith Women headquarters
in Washington earlier this
month to discuss their con-
cerns about the United Na-
tions End Decade Confer-
ence on Women, scheduled
for 1985 in Nairobi.
The gathering was an
outgrowth of a preliminary
meeting held in April by 12
major Jewish women's
organizations which are
concerned with keeping
the Nairobi conference from
becoming politicized by the
PLO and other groups, as
happened at the Mid-
Decade Women's conference
in Copenhagen.

Iraqis Protest
Stars of David
in India Hotel

NEW DELHI (ZINS) —
Delegates from Iraq to the
Third World Conference in
India created a scandal
when they observed that the
giant carpet in the lobby of
the Hotel Tadz contained
six-pointed Star of David
designs. They argued that
these will offend the Iraqi
President Assad. -
They demanded that the
carpet be removed from the
lobby. The hotel manage-
ment complied and also re-
moved other carpets with
the Star of David designs in
other parts of the hotel.
The Star of David, as well
as the swastika, are reli-
gious symbols in India.

tadrut member in Israel is
