President Dr. Harold T.
Shapiro as guest speaker.
There will also be a musi-
cal interlude with Nicolai

As a youngster, Dr.
Shapiro had grown up in
an observant Jewish
home where he studied
Talmud and classical lit-,
erature. As late as World
War II, their affluent
Montreal suburb _ of
Hampstead refused to
allow Jewish students in
the public school system.
Dr. Shapiro did his
undergraduate work at
Montreal's McGill Univer-
sity, where he met his wife
Vivian. He earned his PhD
in economics at Princeton
University and became the
University of Michigan's
10th president at age 44 just
15 years after joining the
university's faculty as an
assistant professor.

Students Cited
Brett Appelman, a sixth
grader at the Hebrew Day
School of Ann Arbor, had
his poem about fall included
in the book, "Young
Authors of Michigan in
1983."
Carrie Fried, also a sixth
grader at the day school,
took third place in
Washtenaw County in a
contest sponsored by the
Michigan Mathematics
League.
