THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Soviet Jewry Movement Building Jerry Goodman, execu- tive director of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, was in Detroit this week to conduct a seminar for board members of the Jewish Welfare Federation, Jewish Community Council and the Detroit Soviet Jewry Committee. Goodman told The Jewish News that the Soviet Jewry movement is always re- building. "Detroit is at the point where it is taking off," he said, adding that a core of concerned people has been broadened," and people are being turned on. "Detroit found new energy when a Larry tac- kier and a Joel Gershenson went to the Soviet Union. They met real people there and became concerned. Now we have to turn on others." Goodman said some people within the move- , ment have become dis- couraged as the Soviet Union closed the immi- gration gates. But, he said, public officials are being kept involved. "His background not withstanding, why should a (Senator) Carl Levin go to the Soviet Union and meet ADD PIZAZZ TO YOUR WARDROBE! He Cares, and people here push him to care. Goodman said the move- ment has to keep working because it will be iri Russia's self-interest to let the Jews leave. "We have developed new things for the movement. Bar and Bat Mitzva twin- ning will not get people out of the Soviet Union but it will keep up the morale of Soviet Jews, especially the young, and it keeps up our morale. It also personalizes the problem. It is no substitute for political advocacy," he said, "but it gives people here a better idea why they are working for Soviet Jewry." Goodman said the NCSJ is working to establish local lawyer groups to work for Soviet Jewry. It is an effort to broaden the grassroots support and show the Soviets "they are abusing the law, both domestic and international." He said the organization's successes are small, but worth it. "If y-ol ask a Soviet Jew if the public pressure has helped, he will say, 'If you didn't do this it would have been worse.' " Goodman said he is not happy that the Soviet Jews are hostage to U.S.-Soviet relations. "Their fate, to a great extent, is in Reagan's hands. The Administration has been very good at ar- ticulating concerns. Now it has to find ways to translate it into more action." Goodman foresees in- creasing contacts be- tween the U.S. and the Soviets, "and we have to see that the Soviet Jewry issue is high on every agenda, on every contact point we have with the Russians. If it is not, then we have to hold the Ad- ministration accounta- ble. "If others care, then the White House will care. It is one of the few ways we have of rescuing Soviet Jews." He predicted that "the economies of the U.S. and the Soviet Union can't sus- tain this (East-West power) struggle. The inevitable ac- commodation will allow Jews to leave."
