Today, the Grand River favorite of so many people seats about 650 upstairs and downstairs . . . The large dining room between a bar and another room was formerly a bil- liard parlor. You'll see Carl there just about every evening . . . He and his restaurant have be- come dining institutions. What started out as one small room with a bar would be unrecognizable to folks who may have patronized the place when Carl first opened . . . He is a rightfully proud man . . . well noted . . . and highly respected .. . both as a person . . . and as a restaurateur. Carl didn't stop with the next-door, large bil- liard hall . . . Another area came after that ... then remodeling of the front with covered park- ing ... Whatever the seat- ing capacity, standing room only and waiting in line was always worth it. However, a strange quirk of fate put Carl in the res- taurant business to begin with . . . At the time, he wasn't too happy about it, but everything worked out beautifully in the end. Carl was doing very nicely in the tire business after service in World War I . . . A friend of his, a faint- hearted fellow from Cleve- land, talked Carl into in- vesting in the Grand River Chop House as the friend was "sure I can make a go of it." It seems that the Cleve- lander was a little thin- skinned about certain fed- eral laws governing the sales of potables and took a powder, leaving Carl with half-a-restaurant and all of a tire store. After frying for a while, Carl came to the conclu- sion that no man can serve two masters, so he sold the tire store and concentrated on running the Grand River Chop House, with eminently successful results. - Business boomed through the '20s and when prohibi- tion came to a screeching halt in the early '30s, Carl was ready to cash in . . . In 1933, Carl's Bar & Chop House, 3020 Grand River, opened doors that were to continue swinging for years to come. As anybody knows who has ever eaten there, steaks and chops are the specialty at Carl's . . . Carl laid claim to selling more 4-H blue ribbon steaks and chops than any other restaurant in the country . . . And therein is a tale by itself. Detroiter have been very kind to Carl . . . They have given him the good life .. . relative wealth, security and position in the commu- nity . . . But Carl has repaid his fellow Detroiters in full. He was one of the city's most active community leaders ... Years ago, when the 4-H Club was hardly worthy of the name, Carl started bid- ding for -prize-winning livestock at the Michigan State Fair. By deliberately bidding the price up on lambs and beef, he put extra money in the pockets of the children who had worked all year to rear a prize-winning pet. When it all began, there were barely 50 exhibitors at the 4-H competition .. . today there are thousands . . . and every year, Carl buys his share . . . He likes to think he has had some- thing to do with the success of the club and takes his greatest pleasure in the notes, written in childish (Continued on Page 28) Formerly Beef & Bird Family Dining 21411 SOUTHFIELD (N. of 11 Mile) 559-1091 BREAKFAST SPECIAL ,7 a.m. to 11 a.m. $ 4 79 • • • • 2 Eggs (any style) • 3 Strips of Bacon or • 3 Links of Sausage • Potatoes, Toast & Jelly I OPEN 1 DAYS -1 a.m.-10 LUNCH & DINNER SPECIALS $3.15 FROM INCLUDES: SOUP, POT., VEG.
