Land to Me," he was uncon- sciously repeating the sen- timents of Menahem Begin, words spoken by the Prime Minister over and over again while referring to an- cient Samaria and Judea. Boone confessed that, when he wrote the song, he had neither read the screen play, seen the picture, nor been to the Holy Land, but was deeply inspired by Leon Uris' book, "Exodux," and by the melodic score by Er- nest Gold. The composer, in turn, said that the music to this selection in the film (re- leased before the lyrics were written) represented the theme of the heroic char- acter of Ari (portrayed on the screen by Paul New- man). Shirley Boone shares her husband's love for Israel and its people. They have visited the country now a number of times during the past 20 years and con- template taking a group of Christians with them when they go again this fall. * * * KENNY ROGERS, reci- pient of the third annual Ben-Gurion Lifetime Achievement Award, be- came interested in the Ben-Gurion University when, two years ago, he per- formed at the first annual event then honoring George Burns. He since has been to Israel and upon accepting an ancient artifact from former ambassador Yosef Tekoah, chancellor of the university, he expressed his humble feelings that "in Is- rael you surround yourself with greatness." He is deeply touched by the awesome task of the Is- raelis — to eliminate hunger. Ben-Gurion him- self, he said, was in the forefront of the struggle against world hunger and the Negev and its univer- sity are developing the sci- entific and technical skill to go ahead with the task, to spearhead the development 'of the desert and making fruitful the virgin territory. * * * GILBERT NIELSON, a world reknowned Scan- dinavian sculptor and sil- versmith, was recently in- troduced at a Beverly Hills Exhibit. Born in Copenhagen in 1915, he became the foun- der of the Scandinavian re- sistance movement against the Nazis. Arrested and im- prisoned by the Germans in 1943, he sculpted two spe- cial monuments: one show- ing Hitler hanging from the gallows; the other a tombstone for Hitler. He es- caped from prison in 1944 after having spent eight months in solitary confine- ment. Since the liberation, Nielsen has developed a casting technique which allows him to transform highly corrosive resistance steel amuminum into a dynamic art that emotes life and sensuality. The royal collection of Denmark con- tains Nielsen's originals. All Hail the LeSportsac Graduates.
