Emeritus, JTA (Copyright 1983, JTA, Inc.) THE HOLOCAUST IN BRONZE: Millions of Jews in this country, in Israel, and throughout the world — including Communist countries — know of the powerful and deeply emotional monument in Warsaw immortalizing • the victims of the Holocaust and the heroic Jewish uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto against the military Nazi occupa- tional forces. Yet, most of these millions of people are not aware of the sculptor who created the massive masterpiece. They don't know the name of Nathan Rapoport, although in the world of art he is considered the foremost monument sculptor. Great as Rapoport is as a sculptor, he is in personal life a very modest person who shies away from personal public- ity. He feels that he is performing a mission by immortalit- ing in a visual form in bronze the Jewish victims and heroes of the Nazi period. His monuments reflect powerfully the Holocaust more than many of the books written on this great tragedy in Jewish history. - Jacques Lipshitz, the world renowned sculptor, has expressed admiration for his work. So did Dr. Abraham A. Davidson, an American professor of art history, in his for- ward to a book, "Nathan Rapoport Sculptures and Monu- ments," just published in New York by Shengold Pub- lishers, Inc. The text of the book, which includes many interesting facts about Rapoport's life and work — along with photographs of his monuments as well as of busts which he made of famous people Tike Arthur Rubinstein — was written by Richard Yaffe, the distinguished journalist. MONUMENTS IN U:S.: Rapoport, who was born in Poland and studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw — and later in Paris and Italy — succeeded in getting out of Poland when the Nazi armies began to occupy the country. On May 11, he was one of the three eminent per- sonalities honored in New York by the Jewish Academy of Arts and'Sciences, the other two being the nuclear physicist Dr. Edward Teller and the Nobel Laureate Dr. Arno A. Penzias. The next day, on May 12, he was honored -by New Jersey Governor Thomas A. Kean at the State Museum of Trenton, N.J. The governor announced that the sum of $1 million will be raised to erect a monument by Rapoport in the Liberty State Park in Trenton. The monument will, in the words of the Governor, be a "major American land- mark." It will depict an American soldier_ in battledress carrying a starved, liberated survivor of the Holocaust from a Nazi camp. Among Rapoport's acclaimed statues in the U.S. is his "Monument to the Six Million Jewish Martyrs" erected in • Philadelphia in 1964. The monument is a focal point for the annual Holocaust observance in Philadelphia. In New York, an impressive memorial in bronze adorns the entrance to the new school of the Park Avenue Synagogue. It depicts Dr. Janusz Korczak, the great Jewish educator who dedicated his life to educating poor children and orphans in Warsaw and who perished dramatically with all the children of his institution in a Nazi gas chamber. MONUMENTS IN ISRAEL: The largest number of Rapoport's Holocaust monuments stand in Israel. Out- standing among them is the monumental "Scroll of Fire" which towers over the Judean Hills overlooking Jerusalem, in the heart of the Bnai Brith Martyr's Forest of six million trees. Then there is a monument by Rapoport bn the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Yad Vashem in Jerusarem; • a - monu- ment in the Kibutz Yad Mordecai immortalizing Mordecai Anilewicz, the commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising who fell in battle; a monument in Kibutz Negba for the fighters in Israel's War of Liberation. It is regrettable that the city of New York, with its .• large Jewish population, has so far not thought of erecting a monument by Rapoport in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. At one time, in the early years after the fall of the Nazi regime, such a project existed and land was even allocated for it by the municipality. But it never mate- rialized. With the formation in Washington of a U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council it is to be hoped that monu- ments depicting the Holocaust and Jewish heroism in fight- ing the Nazis will be raised in New York, and in all major cities in the United States with substantial Jewish popula- tions. lc C. • 4. ♦ - OPINE.
