the accompanying voiced
ignorance about the
Holocaust, one of history's
most ghastly catastrophes."
The MPs were responding
to nationwide expressions of
shock and disgust over "the
Keegstra affair," sub-
sequent remarks attributed
to Conservative MP
Stephen Styles professing
doubt that the Holocaust oc-
curred and "the slow re-
sponse" to these incidents
by Alberta Pren_ier Peter
Lougheed, a leader of the
Conservative Party.
James Keegstra, mayor of
the village of Eckville, Al-
berta and a high school
teacher there for 14 years,
was dismissed from the pro-
vincial school system after
some parents complained
that he was indoctrinating
his pupils with anti-
Semitism. Keegstra reg-
ularly preached to his
classes that Jews are the
root of all evil in the world
and that the Holocaust was
nothing but Jewish prop-
aganda. There are no Jews
in Eckville.
Keegstra was also
ousted from the rightw-
ing Social Credit Party,
but the Eckville town
board refused to dismiss
him as mayor. While the
Keegstra affair was gain-
ing national attention,

$4 Million Grant
for Brandeis U.

WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA)
- A $4 million grant to
endow Brandeis Univer-
sity's computer science de-
partment - the third
largest gift in the univer-
sity's 35-year-history - to
enable Brandeis to "aggres-
sively pursue the finest
computer scientists in the
country," has been an-
nounced by Marver Berns-
tein, the university's
president.
Bernstein said the gift
was made by Mark
Michtom, a former execu-
tive with a major toy mak-
ing firm and that it gives
the university "the oppor-
tunity to build an outstand-
ing department of computer
science."

New Bencher
from NCSY

NEW YORK - The
Young Israel Collegiates
and Young Adults have
published an extensively
revised edition of their
"Shiron Hashulkhon," a
192-page transliterated
bencher, filled with the
newest and most popular
Sabbath songs.
The new edition bears a
full color cover illustration
by Michel Schwartz, and
numerous graphic im-
provements to the basic
text. Both the English and
Hebrew type are larger and
more readable. There are
more extensive directions
for the user and expanded
introductions to all prayers.
For information on ob-
taining copies of the new
bencher, write to the Na-
tional Council of Young Is-
rael, 3 W. 16 St., New York,
N.Y. 10011.

Styles was quoted by the
Edmonton Journal as
saying, "All I know about
the Holocaust is that it is
the name of a television
program ... I haven't
seen anything in terms of
documentary evidence to
prove to me that they (the
Jews) were necessarily
persecuted."

After a tense party caucus
in the provincial parlia-
ment in Edmonton, Styles
rose in the legislature to say
he doesn't doubt that horri-
ble atrocities were commit-
ted, principally but not ex-
clusively against the
Jewish people . ." I regret
leaving the opinion that
such events should be for-
gotten. On the contrary,
they should be remembered
in their stark, terrible
reality."
The matter might have
ended there but Styles told
reporters later that he
hadn't changed his mind

about anything. He said he
had been "misunderstood"
by the Edmonton Journal
reporter. He refused to dis-
cuss his remarks.
Edmonton columnist Don
Braid wrote that the teach-
ings of Keegstra and the as-
sertions by Styles have sha-
ken the Tory government of
Alberta "and earned the
province a blaze of bad pub-
licity by revealing warped
views of history even in the
legislature."
