THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Academic Chair at Hebrew University Assured as Major Honor for Prof. Haber Jail for Dutch Anti-Semite AMSTERDAM (JTA) — Henk Glimmerveen, former chairman of the extreme rightwing Nederlandse Volksunie (NVU) party was sentenced last Friday to six-months' imprisonment for writing and distributing an anti-Semitic pamphlet. The public prosecutor had demanded a 10-month term. Glimmerveen told the court the prison sentence would not silence him. Prof. William Haber, whose half-century of serv- ices in the educational and Jewish social services have earned him a place of major leadership in many quar ters, will have his name perpetuated with an aca- demic chair at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This assurance was given Tuesday evening, at the dinner honoring Dr. Haber, by the toastmaster, Paul Zuckerman. Announcing a generous sum raised on the occasion of the current honor for Dr. Haber, who was awarded the S.Y. Agnon Gold Medal at the local event by Hebrew University Chancellor Av- raham Harman, Zucker- man said that sufficient sums are expected to make the Haber Academic Chair a reality. Hebrew U. He is Ed Van Thijn, 48, who will succeed Willem Polak when he retires next month. The mayors of Dutch cities are appointed by the government. Van Thijn was born in Amsterdam. He became a municipal councilor in 1962 and a member of Parlia- ment in 1967. He was elected chairman of the Labor Party's Parliamen- tary faction in 1981 and served for seven months as Minister of Interior. Van Thijn freely ac- knowledges his Jewish an- cestry. But he is not associ- ated with any Jewish organ- ization and, in recent years, has been a strong critic of the Israeli government of Premier Menahem Begin which he considers reactio- nary.
