A few weeks ago it was for Israel's 35th an- niversary. A week after, it was for the three million Jews suffering oppression in the Soviet Union. Doesn't anyone else suffer oppression in Russia and elsewhere? Why aren't people marching for the persecuted Baptists and Pentecostals in Russia? The Catholics in Lithuania and Poland? These are interesting questions that people must be asking themselves and they deserve a straight an- swer. In mid-April, six Sibe- rian Pentecostal Chris- tians were released from the American Embassy in Moscow. They took ref- uge in the American Em- bassy in 1978 to escape terrible persecution by the Soviet Union. They vowed to remain in the Embassy until they and their families were allowed to emigrate to a country where they could practice freely their reli- gion. On April 10, one of the Pentecostals was finally given a Soviet exist visa. She went to Israel and is sending invitations to the newly-released members of her family to join her in the Jewish state. Among the groupswho agitated for release of the persecuted Christians were the National Interreligious Task Force for Soviet Jewry headed by Sister Ann Gil- len, the American Jewish Committee and the Chris- tian Legal Society. The moral experience is Arab Prisoner Claims Abuse JERUSALEM (JTA) — A West Bank Arab arrested last month for alleged in- citement, has complained to the Supreme Court that he was tortured while under- going interrogation by his Israeli jailers and asked the court to order his transfer to a different prison. The complainant, Walid Mahmoud Al Arda, is the son of the Mayor of Arrabe, a village in the northern region of the West Bank. It was at Arrabe last month that a mysterious illness broke out among local high school girls, provoking charges by local Arabs of mass poisoning by Israelis. Al Arda was accused of trying to generate public panic by reviving the poison scare. He denied the charge but claimed in his petition to the Supreme Court that one of his interrogators beat him and tortured him with electric shock. In an unrelated develop- ment, police last week re- leased a suspect arrested in connection with the gre- Secret Jews' JERUSALEM .(JNI) — The issue of aliya for 3,000-5,000 "secret Jews" reportedly still living in northern Portugal and Spain reached the Israeli headlines last week, as Labor Party delegates Aha- ron Nahmias and Rabbi Menahem Hacohen com- pleted their mission to southern Europe for absorp- tion Minister Aharon Uzan. "We found Jews who have never abandoned their reli- gion since the days of the Inquisition." Later, in response to an appeal by two members of the Zionist Executive to dis- cuss the possible aliya of Marranos and "secret Jews" in other countries like Af- ghanistan, Chairman Arye Dulzin set off debate re- miniscent of the "Who is a Jew" controversy by declar- ing that the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency deal "with the aliya of Jews only." nade murder of Peace Now activist Emil Grunzweig last February.
