The resignation coincided with the escalation of the anti-Arab attacks and has stirred Israeli public de- mands for government ac- tion on the vigilante prob- lem. Joe Glover remains the honorary chairman for the campaign. Jerry Lewis badges and an official vol- unteer kit will identify the marchers. Proceeds from the annual house-to-house solicitation will help provide funds for research, as well as diag- nostic services, lab tests, braces, wheelchairs, follow-up care, counselling and recreation programs to people in Southeastern Michigan with one of the 40 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA. The asso- ciation provides services to patients at no cost to them or their families. Funds from the drive also help support the local MDA-sponsored free clinics located at Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights and Children's Hospital in Detroit. Area residents who want to join the campaign in their neighborhoods should call the Muscular Dystrophy Association Volunteer Headquarters, 399-2980. Catholics Anger Tourist Guides JERUSALEM (JNI) — Israel's tour guides have in- formed the Catholic Church that they will stop any Catholic group being led by a priest without a tour guide. Noting that the diffi- culty is restricted mainly to Catholic groups, the guides' telegram to the apostolic delegation made clear, "This is a trade union struggle, not a political or religious conflict." TORONTO (JTA) — Premier Peter Lougheed of Alberta has promised to in- troduce an educational campaign to combat racial and religious bigotry in the aftermath of two recent in- cidents in whcih holders of public office in the province questioned the authenticity - of the Holocaust. Lougheed addressed the problem of tolerance and re- spect for minority groups after Stephen Stiles, a member of the Alberta legislature, claimed pub- licly that the slaughter of Jews by the Nazis has never been proven. Stiles, a 38-year-old lawyer and a member of Lougheed's Progressive Conservative Party, sub- sequently apologized to the legislature for offending anyone, but he did not clearly renounce his doubts about the Holocaust. Loughheed's seven- page letter to the legisla- ture, promising a cam- paign to promote under- standing and acceptance of minorities, made no mention of Stiles' com- ments. Only a few weeks ago, a Queens Court Judge upheld the dismissal from the Al- berta school system of James Keegstra, a public school teacher and mayor of the village of Eckville, who had been preaching anti- Semitism to his classes, in- cluding the claim that there was no Holocaust. Keegstra was also ousted from the right wing Social Credit Party which had just elected him to a high party office. Lougheed has been criticized for not responding until now to these incidents although he had been urged to do so by Alberta's Jewish community and in a cable from Simon Wiesenthal, the Vienna-based Nazi hunter. Lougheed said in his letter that "History shows that elements of bigotry such as anti- . Semitism in this recent case can grow like a cancer if not challenged and vigorously con- demned by those in a position of responsibil- ity." Howard Starkman, president of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, the Alberta capital, said he was "very pleased" with the premier's response. Silk weaving in the U.S. was introduced by Tobias Kohn.
