EEC Welcomes Lebanon-Israel Pact

BONN (JTA) — The
European Economic Com-
munity has welcomed the
accord reached betweeh Is-
rael and Lebanon and
signed by the two countries.
West Germany's Foreign
Minister Hans-Dietrich
Genscher made that point -
at a press conference follow-
ing a two-day informal
meeting of the foreign

ministers of the 10 EEC-
member states.
But Genscher, who cur-
rently holds the rotating
chairmanship of the EEC
Council of Ministers, gave
no indication of the Euro-
pean reaction to Syria's re-
jection of the agreement,
which could render it in-
operative.
There was an under-
standing here that the
European Community
will try to exert influence
on Damascus to pull Sy-
rian forces out of Leba-
non. German sources
could not say how the Sy-
riar(s would be addressed
or on what level.
Unless- Syria withdraws
from Lebanon, the Israelis
will not pull 'Gilt their
troops, and the status quo in
Lebanon will remain. The
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
learned that the EEC
Foreign Ministers did not

consider lifting the partial
sanctions imposed on Israel
after its invasion of Leba-
non in June 1982.
Sources here have said
such a move was possible
only after the actual with-
drawal of Israeli forces
takes place.
Prior to the ministers'
meeting, sources said it was
"premature" to speak of lift-
ing the sanctions and there
was not even a remote
chance to reach the needed
consensus to do so at this
time.
Israeli Foreign Minister
Yitzhak Sharair is due in
Brussels some time next

month for talks with Bel-
gian and EEC officials. Is-
rael's demand that the sanc-
tions be lifted is expected to
be high on the agenda.

EEC May Join
UN Conclave
on Palestine

STRASBOURG (JTA) —
The European Parliament
called on the governments
of the 10 European Eco-
nomic Community
member-states to take an
active :part in the UN-
sponsored international
conference • on Palestine
scheduled to take place next
summer in Paris.
The European Parlia-
ment resolution was
adopted by a large majority
in spite of the fact that the
goveihments of the 10
states have condemned the
conference and have an-
nounced that they will not
participate.
France's Foreign Minis-
ter Claude Cheysson has
condemned the forthcoming
meeting as "not a product-
ive move" and has called on
the Palestinian leadership
and on the Arab states to
call off the scheduled meet-
ing. The Conference, decided
by a UN General Assembly
vote last summer; is to take
place at UNESCO head-
quarters in Paris Aug.

Population Odds

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Yit-
zhak Tisohler, writing in
Davar Hashavua, says that
the percentage of Jews in Is-
rael, Judea, Samaria and
Gaza is virtually the same
today as it was following the
Six-Day War.
TisChler wrote -that in
1967, the areas had a total
population of 3.75 million,
including 2.3 million Jews
(63 percent).
In 1981, the entire area
had a population of 5.14 mil-
lion. The Jewish population
was 3.32 million (64.5 per-
cent).
Tischler -wrote that the
statistics are proving the
forecasters wrong in their
belief that the Arab popula-
tion would swallow the
Jewish population.

Make no enemies. He is
insignificant indeed who
can do thee no harm.
